Midterm review

Scientific Method Recognize the problem (observe, infer) Form hypothesis Test Hypothesis Analyze data Draw conclusions Communicate

Scientific Method-terms Hypothesis- A statement that can be tested Inference- a conclusion about an observation Experiment-investigation to test a hypothesis in planned steps

Independent variable- factor that you can change in an experiment Dependent variable- the factor or outcome that is measured Constant- factor that always stays the same Control- standard used for comparison

Lab safety Study the procedures, ask teacher if you have questions Obtain teachers permission to begin all investigations and to use lab equipment Never eat, drink chew gum, apply comestic or do any personal grooming in lab Never use lab glassware as food or drink container

Lab safety Use safety equipment including, aprons and goggle, Tie back long hair and loose clothing Keep hands away from face and mouth

Lab Tools Identify the following tools: cylinder Erlenmeyer flask beaker test tube graduated cylinder

Metric Measurement a. Basic Unit for Mass: b. Basic Unit for Length: Gram, g Tools used to measure mass: triple beam balance b. Basic Unit for Length: Meter, m Tools used to measure length: Metric ruler, meter stick Basic Unit for Volume: Liter, L Tools to measure volume: graduated cylinder

Chapter 20: Changes in Matter Physical change: A change in which the appearance of matter changes, but not its composition. ex: water freezing, mold clay, crumple paper

Physical Property: A property that can be observed without changing the composition of the substance. Examples: The apple is red. The ball is round. The paper has the ability to be ripped. The pond has the ability to freeze. The water has the ability to boil.

Chemical Change: A change in which the composition of the substance changes. ex: nail that rusts, candle burning Chemical property: a characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. Ex: ability to burn, ability to rust
