Presentation transcript:

Aim: How do bonds form? Do Now: Copy definitions below and then graph the electronegativities for all of the elements in period 3. Electronegativity indicates how strongly an atom of an element attracts electrons in a chemical bond. Electronegativity values are assigned according to arbitrary scales and are found on Table S. The electronegativity difference ( EN) between two bonded atoms is used to assess the degree of polarity in the bond. If EN is 1.7 or greater, the bond is generally considered to be ionic.

Aim: How do bonds form? Essential Questions: Explain why the properties of ions differ from the properties of their parent atoms. Relate an atom’s tendency to form an ion to the element’s position in the periodic table and to the octet rule. Why is an element like carbon more likely to share electrons?

Aim: How do bonds form? Covalent bond- is formed when two nuclei share electrons in order to achieve a stable arrangement of electrons; non-metals only. Draw Lewis structures for chlorine; hydrogen; oxygen; and nitrogen
