Doppler Effect and Redshift

Parts of a Wave

Wave Properties Wavelength Wavelength, l, is the distance between two consecutive peaks.

Wave Properties Amplitude Amplitude is the height of the wave above or below the equilibrium point. How loud or strong a wave is.

Wave Properties Frequency - the number of waves passing a particular point in one second. Frequency, f, is Also known as pitch. Longer wavelength = Lower frequency = red shift Shorter wavelength = Higher frequency = blue shift

DOPPLER EFFECT Refers to the change in frequency when there is relative motion between an observer of waves and the source of the waves Doppler with Sound

The Doppler Effect Change in frequency due to relative motion of the source. Greater the speed of the source, greater the effect. Stationary bug Bug swimming

Hubble’s Discovery Hubble observed that the wavelength of light coming from distant galaxies was experiencing redshift . This means the light source is moving away from the observer and increasing in wavelength (doppler effect). The longer the light travels, the more it gets redshifted.
