Macbeth Act III Scenes 5 and 6 By Ryan Rejaie and Allie Liberatore

Scene 5 Question 1 Q: What is Hecate’s plan for Macbeth and what does this reveal, if anything, about how the play will end? A: She plans to trick Macbeth with illusions and make him overconfident. This reveals that things will end badly for Macbeth and he will not be king forever.

Scene 5 Question 2 Q: Cite text evidence: In lines 9-23, cite lines that reveal Macbeth’s change and tone regarding the events surrounding Banquo’s murder. A:“A man who behaves like a spoiled brat, angry and hateful.”(lines 9-11)

Scene 5 Question 3 Q: What does Hecate symbolize? Explain. A:She symbolizes manipulation because she is manipulating Macbeth into becoming a tragic hero.

Scene 5 Question 4 Q: Explain how the paradox “Fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene. A:Hecate believes that by ruining Macbeth she is doing the world good.

Scene 6 Question 1 Q: What opinion do Lennox and the other thanes hold of Macbeth? A:They see him as a tyrant.

Scene 6 Question 2 Q:Macduff does not appear at all in Act III. Where is he, and why? A:He has gone to England because he wants to join Malcolm in pleading with King Edward for aid.

Scene 6 Question 3 Q:Explain what life in Scotland under Macbeth has been like, and how some noblemen plan to put an end to Macbeth’s rule. Cite text evidence. A:It is under the rule of a tyrant, people are being murdered, and no one has enough food to eat.”From whom this tyrant holds the due of birth.”(line 25)

Scene 6 Question 4 Q: Predict what may happen in the next act of the play. Cite specific examples of foreshadowing to demonstrate what lead you to your prediction. A: A war will break out between England and Scotland. “And this report hath so exasperate the King that he prepares for some attempt of war.”(lines 37- 38).“Advise him to a caution t’hold what distance.”(line 44)

Literary Elements Symbolism (scene V) Paradox (scene V) Hecate symbolizes manipulation because she plans to trick Macbeth with illusions and visions. Paradox (scene V) The paradox “fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene because Hecate is telling the witches that they must manipulate Macbeth into getting what they want. She believes that it is the right thing to do, but she is practically torturing Macbeth.

Literary Elements continued Conflict (scene VI) In this scene, Lennox and another lord discuss their opinions on Macbeth. They also talk about how Macduff is in England trying to get the king’s help to defeat Macbeth. They believe that a war will break out between England and Scotland. Irony (scene VI) Lennox and the lord call Macbeth a tyrant because everyone in Scotland is living in poverty and he is not doing anything to help them, but in reality Macbeth has done much more to be considered a tyrant. This is dramatic irony because we know that Macbeth has killed Duncan and Banquo but the characters do not.
