Literary Elements Symbolism (scene V) Paradox (scene V) Hecate symbolizes manipulation because she plans to trick Macbeth with illusions and visions. Paradox (scene V) The paradox “fair is foul and foul is fair” applies to this scene because Hecate is telling the witches that they must manipulate Macbeth into getting what they want. She believes that it is the right thing to do, but she is practically torturing Macbeth.
Literary Elements continued Conflict (scene VI) In this scene, Lennox and another lord discuss their opinions on Macbeth. They also talk about how Macduff is in England trying to get the king’s help to defeat Macbeth. They believe that a war will break out between England and Scotland. Irony (scene VI) Lennox and the lord call Macbeth a tyrant because everyone in Scotland is living in poverty and he is not doing anything to help them, but in reality Macbeth has done much more to be considered a tyrant. This is dramatic irony because we know that Macbeth has killed Duncan and Banquo but the characters do not.
