SPURN POINT Alice Osborne.

What is a spit? Spits are created by deposition. A spit is an extended stretch of beach that projects out to sea and is joined to the mainland at one end. Spits are formed where the prevailing wind blows at an angle to the coastline, resulting in longshore drift. An example of a spit is Spurn Point, found along the coast at the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

An aerial photo of Spurn Point. It stretches across the Humber for three and a half miles. In some places it’s only 50 metres wide. Some people say it looks like an elongated tongue.

How Spurn Point was formed? The land north of Spurn Point is made of bolder clay. The clay is soft and unstable. Spits are formed when the prevailing wind blows at an angle to the coastline and erodes the clay, depositing it further along.

What is it made of? It is made of lots of different materials such as sand, shingle which is small pebbles , and bolder clay and that is held together by Marram grass and seabuckthorn. In the 1950s it was looked after by Ministry of defence but they didn’t want it so they gave it to The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust .The Victorians tried to put up some sea defences to try and stabilise it.

How it formed 1) Longshore drift moves material along the coastline. 2) A spit forms when the material is deposited. 3) Over time, the spit grows and develops a hook if wind direction changes further out. 4) Waves cannot get past a spit, which creates a sheltered area where silt is deposited and mud flats or salt marshes form.

Is Spurn Point fragile? A redwing Spurn Point is very fragile because it is open to the North sea’s weather. It’s also a haven of wild life such as migrant birds, lizards, roe deer, and numerous species of insects.

POPULAR THINGS TO DO AT SPURN PIONT. Fossil hunting is popular and lots of fossils are still to be uncovered from the pebble beach. You can go and see it yourself. These are some other things people have found .

QUIZ QUESTIONS. Number 1, Number 3, What wild life is there? Number 2, How far does Spurn Point stretch along the Humber? How are spits formed? Number 4, What is Spurn Point made out of?
