Modified Block or Block Style? In block style everything is keyed at the left margin. Modified Block style has certain items tabbed to 3.25”. Which is preferred by companies? Modified Block or Block? Either can be used—you have to decide which one you prefer and make the decision to consistently use it!
Modified Block Style Paragraphs in the Body of a modified block style letter may be indented or they may be placed at the left margin. If paragraphs are indented you must set a tab at 0.5” in addition to the required 3.25”.

How do you create a tab? You will need to create two tabs: 0.5” to indent paragraphs 3.25” for the modified block style To create a tab it is as simple as clicking on the ruler in Word. Make sure your ruler is showing. Click on the View menu, choose Ruler. Click at the 0.5” measurement and 3.25” measurement as you see below. A small L will appear. Your tabs are set!
How do you tab? When you are ready to tab over a part of your letter, simply hit the TAB key on your keyboard. The first tab will advance your cursor to 0.5”. The second time you hit tab will advance your cursor to 3.25”. It is that easy!
