13.2 – Human Genetic Disorders Essential Questions: How are genetic disorders inherited in humans? How are genetic disorders traced, diagnosed, and treated?

What is a genetic disorder? A genetic disorder is an abnormal condition that a person inherits through genes or chromosomes.

How are genetic disorders inherited? Single Gene Disorders Mutations in the DNA of genes. Chromosome Abnormalities Changes in the overall structure or number of chromosomes. Multifactorial Disorders Mutations in multiple genes coupled with environmental causes.

Single Gene Disorders Mutations in the DNA of genes. Cystic Fibrosis – Abnormally thick mucus in the lungs. Sickle-Cell Disease Red blood cells are misshaped so they don’t carry as much O2.
