We, the children of the Anthropocene Era, are entering the 4th industrial revolution and the impact is going to be pervasive and of greater magnitude compared to the previous industrial revolutions. The incoming changes, approaching at an accelerating speed, will be impacting everything and everybody….. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

If we are not farsighted and don’t plan effectively, the results could be very problematic for all life forms on Earth. If we manage the 4th industrial revolution with the same blindness and forms of denial with which we managed the previous industrial revolutions, the negative effects will be exponential. . World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

But we should not despair we are not impotent: human history shows that in the most dramatic moments we can use our sense of Personal Agency, use our Personal Power, develop our creativity and resilience in other words if we use at best our power and determination to became fully human. We can manage this revolution effectively and wisely, increase the positive effects and mitigate the negative ones since technology is designed, made and managed by human beings. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Technology is designed, made and managed by human beings. If we fully develop our capacities to be fully human we can effectively manage this revolution We can wisely increase the positive effects and mitigate the negative ones. Technology is designed, made and managed by human beings. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

We cannot afford to be naïve and just hope that technology will automatically improve our lives; new and effective tools for understanding and governing such epochal changes are needed. We need to facilitate awareness in all the stakeholders about the dangers and opportunities offered by the incoming changes. New & Effective forms of education are crucial. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

For effective governance, we need effective tools. The fourth revolution could be an unprecedented success if we will be able to manage complex processes and at the same time assure that each innovation will not only bring change but also foster a more humane, sustainable, resilient peaceful and prosperous future for all. For effective governance, we need effective tools. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

One much-needed tools that will increase our resilience is the clear understanding of how we humans construe the experience of ourselves, of others and other life forms. Unfortunately, most of us still think we live in a unidimensional reality, but we live in a socially construed consensus reality, ignoring this basic fact we damage ourselves, create crucial blind spots, diminish our coping capacities and resilience, generating boomerang effects with our incompetent actions. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

To win these challenges, effective and scientifically validated person & people centered educational approaches are necessary. They will play a crucial role in enabling us to stop wasting our best resources: human and natural capital and will facilitate us to achieve effective and sustainable governance. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

In 2012, 12.6 million deaths globally, representing 23% of all deaths, were attributable to the environment. When accounting for both death and disability, the fraction of the global burden of disease due to the environment is 22%. In children under five years, up to 26% of all deaths could be prevented, if environmental risks were removed. World Health Organization ( 2016 ). Preventing disease through Healthy Environments. A global assessment of the burden of disease from environmental risks World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Education will have a crucial role in what will happen, but ….. Since reality is socially construed, in order to have a 4th industrial revolution that will protect and promote human and natural capital, we need to educate everybody to give their contribution to reach that goal Education will have a crucial role in what will happen, but ….. What kind of Education is Needed to Navigate the Fourth Industrial Revolution?? World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

We need to have education based on reality: a people centered education, scientifically grounded on how people learn and develop their potentialities. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Education is an important aspect of the social construction of reality. Education is at the same time a process and a product, is one of the most important building blocks of society. Effective education promotes creativity, resilience, health and prosperity but.. dysfunctional education produces serious damages……. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

The problem with schools is that there are too many teachers and so few facilitators of learning John Dewey World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

To retool obsolete education, we need to effectively facilitate the learning of educators and decision makers so they can became part of the solution and not remain part of the problem World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

“I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn” Albert Einstein World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

We need a compass to navigate change, to learn how to relate in sustainable ways to ourselves, others and the world World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

More capacity for respecting oneself, others and the world Some of the variables that will effectively foster a more humane and sustainable future for social and natural capital: More awareness More empathy More capacity for respecting oneself, others and the world More responsibility in the sense of the ability to respond World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

The Person-Centered Approach is a scientifically proven effective way to create solutions on a win-win basis. Originated by Carl Rogers, the Person-Centered Approach (PCA) is a systemic, holistic approach applied successfully in the various helping relationships and in interpersonal relationships including education. PCA focuses on capacities rather than on limitations; empowers and promotes learning, well-being and resilience by facilitating the development of the potentialities of individuals, groups and organizations. PCA helps people to grow, learn self regulation and take responsibility for what they do rather than fostering dependency. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Person/Student Centered Education, apply more scientifically validated knowledge than traditional education; the principles of Student centered education are congruent with the present scientific knowledge derived from psychology, sociology, anthropology and neuroscience. Student centered education is more effective than the traditional professor centered teaching and content centered learning. Student centered education is more effective than traditional education also in learning “hard sciences” or when computer assisted learning, hybrid courses and e-learning are used. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Person/Student Centered Education Goals To protect and promote the person innate creative capacities of learning from their experiences To promote wholeness and integration in the individual by focusing on the student’s personal growth and development To promote the development of competent, creative and resilient members of society , able to contribute effectively to the life of their community World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

The role of the student in Person Centered Education Learning to take responsibility for one’s own personal development Interested in the development of social, personal and problem-solving skills Learning to learn, develop reflexive and critical thinking Learning from mistakes Willing to contribute to a cooperative and tolerant school ethos Able to learn how to relate to herself and others with respect, empathy and congruence World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Empathic understanding Authenticity/congruence (deep contact) Carl Rogers’ research over the last 70 years has identified specific qualities in relationships which promote the development of fully functioning persons. These relational qualities are present in effective facilitators of learning: Respect Empathic understanding Authenticity/congruence (deep contact) World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Teacher-Centred Learning Person/Student-Centred Learning Teacher holds the power Students empowerment Low student choice High student choice Students are passive Students have an active role World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Among the positive results: The research shows that Student-centered education has better outcomes than traditional education, offering positive results with students of different gender, ethnicity and cultures. Among the positive results: Better achievement of educational goals, better attendance, more students satisfaction, better morale, better self image, more critical thinking, better problem solving, better relationships between students in and outside classroom, less destructive behaviors or drop outs. The revised European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance, states: "Institutions should ensure that programmes are delivered in a way that encourages students to take an active role in creating the learning process and that the assessment of students reflects this approach." World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Person centered, student centered education is also an effective form of Peace Education To learn how to listen, how to understand emphatically yourself and others, how to respect the different needs and part of yourself and others is at the same time an education that protects and promotes individual and social health, individual and societal potentialities and is an effective way to help persons and communities to learn how to learn and to be at peace with themselves, others and all the living lifeforms World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

“ When doctors appear empathetic and deliver hopeful messages, people often feel less anxious about the cause of pain and its future course. This leads the brain to release natural painkillers, such as endorphins” Dr. J. Howick, Empathy Project, University of Oxford. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

Education at its best is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual learning experience promoting our capacities to live a significant existence and develop our potentialities to become creative, resilient and peaceful citizens. World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium

We need to think globally and act locally in effective ways and to We need to effectively protect and promote human & environmental capital We need to think globally and act locally in effective ways and to do so we need to offer people the knowledge, skills and competencies to operate at intersectorial and interdisciplinary levels Socio cultural Environmental Economic Psychological Spiritual World Academy of Art and Science World University Consortium
