Welcome to curriculum night! Mrs. King’s 2nd Grade Class Mill Creek 2016-2017

A day in the life of a second grader!

7:25-7:40 Student arrival Students will follow our class Morning Agenda upon arrival Come in unpack quickly Check KING binder for important papers/notes/money All voices go to level 0 when tardy bell rings Morning Show/Daily Editing begins after tardy bell (morning show will air Mon., Wed., and Fri.) Also, during this time attendance will be taken, email check and we will start our day! (students are considered late after 7:40 tardy bell, carline closes at 7:38. Instructional time starts at 7:40)

7:40/7:50-8:30 Daily editing activity/A.r. Recess Daily Editing activities will focus around Language Arts and Math skills. Students correct sentences, practice grammar skills, spelling skills, and different math skills. Each student uses their Daily Editing Journal to complete assignment. After daily editing activity, the students are allowed to read silently, take A.R. test, and check out library books.

8:30-9:00 Go over Daily Editing and KING binders After going over our Daily Editing skills, we record important information in our KING binders/planners.

9:00-9:30 P.E. P.E. teachers: Coach Klien, Coach Hodge, and Coach Upshaw Students will be escorted to the gym during their P.E. time. Students will need to wear tennis shoes everyday to P.E. No dress shoes, sandals nor crocks are allowed during P.E. Please reference P.E. policy note.

Snack 9:30-9:40 Every child will need to bring snack from home. Sugary snacks and drinks are not suggested. Please see school letter pertaining to food items that may be brought to school.

9:45-10:30 Grammar and writing Grammar and writing instruction will be immediately after P.E., during this time we will focus on Grammar and writing skills for the week.

Breakdown of our Reading Block: Wonders is our reading program Whole group reading instruction-10:30-11:15 Small group reading instruction/AR11:15-12:00 (Other students will be working in Lit. centers) Wonders is our reading program http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do

12:00-12:30 Lunch Time! Students may purchase or bring lunches from home. (prices and menus can be found on Madison City’s Website. (www.madisoncity.k12.al.us) Please make sure to put your child’s lunch money in a sealed envelope with name and amount. (Take advantage of Paypams) Parents are welcome to join us for lunch any day.

12:40-1:00 Recess We will have recess everyday. Friday’s will be inside recess. Students are allowed to bring in toys/devices from home only on Fridays.

2:15-2:35 Social/Science Science: We incorporate AMSTI kits during science (Solids and Liquids, Balancing and Weighing, Organisms and Soils) Social Studies: will include special events (such as Historical leaders, our country. Etc.)

2:35-2:37 Pack-up/Dismissal This concludes our day! We will get our room tidy, pack up and dismiss. All transportation changes will need to be emailed to me and Mrs. Willis, our office secretary, as early as possible (no later than 2:00).

Newsletter/Homework Newsletters and homework will be posted on our website weekly. Please check our website often for updates and announcements. Nightly reading 20 min will be required (please log books read in planner) and math page. Online Homework (Optional) The option to practice skills that your child will be working on during the school year is available. Links to each resource can be found on Mill Creek’s website. Wonders Stride Academy (took the place of Success Maker) Renaissance Learning (math facts in flash) (Parent Guide to technology resources) We are a Bring Your Own Device system (BYOD) so allow your child to bring their devices to use at school.  http://mces.madisoncity.k12.al.us/

Extra Curricula Activities Spanish-1:20 1:50 (Tuesday) Spanish teacher: Mrs. Powell Art/Music-10:30-11:10 (Wednesday) Art Teacher: Mrs. Newby (1st semester) Music Teacher: Mrs. Stewart (2nd semester) Guidance Counseling 1:55-2:35 ( 4th Thursday) Counselor: Mrs. Claborn Computer-11:10-11:50 (Fridays) Library- will be used as needed Library Teacher: Mrs. Gray and Coach Joffee

Behavior I expect each student to follow the rules of our classroom. (see behavior chart and classroom rules. This information is also available on our website) We also use class Dojo. Students earn points for showing good character.

Test and Assessments DIBELS testing will be given 3 times this school year on Oral Fluency (End of the year benchmark is 111) STAR Reading and STAR Math: testing will be giving 5 times this school year AR: Each student is encourage to meet goals (Parents may keep up with their child’s progress through Home connect, this link is found on our website) OLSAT: Gifted Test

Reading Test Weekly Comprehension test (computer based, Fridays) Unit test (end of each reading unit, there are 6 units) Spelling test (Fridays) Note: your child may not have a spelling test every week. Math Test Timed test (Weekly) Standard checks (after each skill taught) 9 weeks math assessments

Report of Learning /progress reports Your child will be assessed on each math and reading standard. Progress reports will go home every 41/2 weeks Report of learning will go home every 9 weeks

Absences All absences require a parent or Dr. note. Parent and Dr. notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. 10 parent notes are allowed within a school year (after 10, a Dr. note is needed or the child’s absence will be unexcused) Emailing me a note stating the reason your child was absent is TOTALLY acceptable. I will forward the notes to Allyson Willis, our office secretary, or you can cc her when you send to me.
