Dressed simply (ill-fitted clothes) PERSONALITY: Had a gift of friendship… easy going, loved people, was interested in their thoughts, ideas, & problems… He had a remarkable memory for names & faces. Welcomed constructive criticism. RECREATION: Loved to hunt and fish… Always took a morning walk. Loved Chess & landscaping. Never smoked or drank

PRESIDENT HAYES EARLY CHILDHOOD: Father dies before he is born. Mother supports family by renting out land His oldest sister had the greatest influence on him Inseparable when they were young. When she dies in 1856 Rutherford is crushed. EDUCATION: Kenyon College(Ohio) valedictorian Law school at Harvard. Admitted to the Bar in 1845 RELIGION: Presbyterian, then Episcopal, then Methodist (because of his wife)

Purpose to strengthen confidence in US money. 4. Civil Service Reform: Hayes wanted competitive exams for government jobs & a civil service commission. Congress fails to act. 5. Chinese Immigration: Treaty of 1880… Put a restriction on Chinese coming into America 6. Panama Canal: France planning to build a canal… Hayes said: “The policy of this country is a canal under US control” US cannot surrender this power to any European Nation.
