Talk task Which strategies are most effective?

Our Golden Rules We are positive and polite - we don’t act in an impolite way.   We are gentle - we don't hurt others. We are kind and helpful -we don't hurt anybody’s feelings. We listen well - we don't interrupt. We are honest - we don't cover up the truth. We work hard with all our learning - we don’t waste our own or other’s time We look after property – we don't waste or damage things.

Rewards include coming into school in a choice of own clothes, being given additional play time having a house party.    Golden Time on a Friday afternoon where children are able to select activities as a reward.

Children who have made wrong choices during the week will lose Golden time, (although they can contract to earn it back by showing their teacher that they are really trying to improve.)

Key Approaches A new scheme called ‘Maths Mastery’ was introduced across the school last year. Maths Mastery Key mathematical concepts are taught and then applied and connected to other areas of learning throughout the year and beyond. This approach deepens understanding, and consolidates knowledge and skills. Growth Mindset – supports positive attitudes towards learning and high self esteem. It refers to a way of thinking, learning and taking on challenges. A person with a growth mindet is open to constructive criticism, takes feedback , pushes themselves outside their comfort zone and shows resilience and perseverance. Studies show that it is people with a growth mindset as opposed to affixed mindset who achiev in life are successful in all thye do and are happy. Of course this is exactly what we want for all our children Purpose and culture - A strong, clear purpose and culture will support us to develop independent, resilient, confident learners, and will have a huge impact upon behaviour management.

Growth Mindset We want to nurture children to: love to learn new things and be challenged always have a go not give up easily persevere always try to improve by listening to criticism know that we can be clever at anything so we must practice the things we find hard

Class Culture At St. Joseph’s we want to develop a strong, clear purpose and culture. This will support us to develop independent, resilient, confident learners, and will have a huge impact upon behaviour management. So far in Year 1 we have identified our purpose, this week we will create our culture!

Purpose and Culture – school values S – Self belief T – Tolerance  J – Joy O – Opportunities for all to reach their potential S – Successes celebrate our successes E – Enthusiastic, engaged learners P – Perseverance H – Honesty

Working in partnership at home Reading a variety of genres for enjoyment Practising time tables and corresponding division facts Using and applying maths in everyday scenarios Helping with home learning activities Supporting life skills in children Discussing home learning to reinforce learning in the school environment

This evening is an introduction to KS1 This evening is an introduction to KS1. There will be opportunities this term, especially at parent review day to discuss your child’s learning. Any Questions? Thank you and Goodnight! enquiries@st-josephs.sheffield.sch.uk
