Key Publications Committee Activities* Editor-in-chief transitions New staff for AIAA books program Katrina Buckley, Managing Editor, Books Recent books published Finances for books and journals Ended FY2016 with a positive direct margin of $239,868 (excluding labor and allocations). Total subscription revenue for the journals program was $4,289,868 (excluding revenue from voluntary publication charges, individual article purchases, and perpetual institutional sales). Additional financial details can be found in the addendum. *Reference January 2017 Publications News Letter & Institute Activity Report

Key Publications Committee Activities (cont.) External sales and marketing successes AIAA’s external partners relationships completing year three Publishers Communication Group (PCG) (serving North and South America) and Accucoms (Europe, India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)), Continue to produce strong sales on our behalf. Our sales force focuses on institutional customers, Promoting AIAA’s journals and meeting paper subscriptions and their archive; AIAA ebooks; and AIAA eStandards (as a package). New sales for the Americas totaled $505,000. European, Indian, and MENA sales totaled $601,000. Total expenses for our outside sales efforts in FY2016 were $281,000, providing a return on investment of 294%.

Key Publications Committee Activities (cont.) Journal subscription overview Institutional annual subscriptions totaled 2,802 in FY2016, represents a 0% change from FY2015. Institutional journal archive subscriptions continue to increase, with 296 across all journals in FY2016, representing a 13% increase over FY2015. Member journal subscriptions continue their downward trend over the past five years, averaging a total of 2,330 in FY2016. In combination with a price increase for member subscriptions, revenue from member subscribers decreased by 6% from FY2015. The first year for Journal of Air Transportation was modestly successfully. There were 42 institutional subscribers and 8 member subscriptions. Staff is optimistic that this journal’s subscriptions will continue to grow.

Key Publications Committee Activities (cont.) Book sales The number of print books sold in FY2016 declined by about 6% from the prior year; this downward trend in book sales is seen across the publishing industry. The series sales mix has been steady over the past few years, Education Series sales the highest at 60% of all books, followed by Library of Flight at 28%, and Progress Series, 12%. E-book sales continue to grow. Top sellers for the year are listed in Publication’s pre-conference news letter.

Publications Committee SciTech Highlights CrossMark Workshop Originally introduced at SciTech 2015 Functionality is now available for all journals and meeting papers in Aerospace Research Central (ARC). A CrossMark logo on the PDF or web document provides information about the publication letting researchers know if they are accessing the most current content or if updates are available, such as additions or corrections to a publication. Faulty or disputed content, or circumstances where authors have been sanctioned, also can be flagged. The CrossMark information confirms for users that they are viewing the most recent and up-to- date version of a journal article or meeting paper. AIAA staff will be holding a CrossMark workshop Wednesday, January 11, 2:00 p.m. in Hotel Suite 6355, Gaylord Texan *Reference January 2017 Publications News Letter & Institute Activity Report
