Stardust – A Fresh Look at Planetary Defence Massimiliano Vasile University of Strathclyde

Why kinetic impactors are not always the best option? It can be demonstrated that for the mass fraction that actually impact the asteroid is theoretically 1 while for shallow crossers can be as low as 0.1 for the same impact velocity. Can we make nuclear blasts reliable and controllable? The nuclear cycler is a new concept that provides enhanced controllability and reliability with 15% loss in efficiency Can lasers be a solution? With a thrust coupling of over 35 mN/W (an ion beam gives 20-40 mN/W), lasers can achieve a mass into space up to 40 times lower than an ion beaming system for the same deflection Dv

New observation and detection orbits for Aitra asteroids. Equipped with a payload equivalent to NEOSSat, a small 700kg spacecraft can improve the ephemerides of 7 Atira asteroids and detect 3 new Atira per observation. Understanding the re-entry process. Are current predictions meaningful? Multipoint simulation and evaluation of asteroid re-entry scenarios.
