Snack and Water Each student needs to bring a small snack each day. Only send enough for one day, and please don’t send snacks that need refrigeration. Please do not send in sweet or sticky items like cake, brownies, frosted cookies, or cupcakes. I also permit my students to bring a water bottle to school to keep on their desks during the day and to use at recess. Plain water is the only beverage permitted, and the bottle must have a secure lid. Water bottles should be taken home regularly to be cleaned.

Literacy Reading/Writing/Spelling/Grammar All subjects will be flexible and based on the needs of my students. We follow a workshop model for reading and writing. Curriculum information can be found on the DPS district website: http://curriculum.dpsk12.org

Expectations for Homework Folders and Calendars Homework Folder - Monday-Thursday, with homework, building messages and class work. Calendars - daily, with homework written by students. We are using a monthly calendar as our planner. Parents please sign this calendar sheet nightly.

Homework District policy for 5th grade is 50 minutes nightly, Monday through Thursday. No homework on weekends or off track times. If there is a situation that prevents homework from being done, please write a note to me and I will give an extension. Homework not completed will be done during recess time.

We are all expected to: Listen carefully Follow directions Work quietly Respect others Respect school and personal property

Classroom Management Each student has pocket contains a strip of colored paper. Everyone begins each day on green. If a class rule is broken, the color changes to yellow, which is the first caution. If another behavior problem occurs that day, the color will change to orange, the second caution. Furthermore, the student will have to complete a Time Out worksheet explaining their inappropriate behavior and how they plan to correct the problem. These forms will be sent home to parents to be signed and returned. The color red is reserved for very severe discipline problems and results in a phone call home or a trip to the office.

Classroom Awards Classroom Behavior BUCKS Ways to earn BUCKS: Once a week for turning all homework in and on time Daily for making good choices and working hard Caught doing something terrific It is the responsibility of the students to keep track of their BUCKS. Every trimester students may cash in their BUCKS. Students may cash in their BUCKS for the following items: 15 BUCKS: choose from the treasure box 20 BUCKS: choose from the snack box 30 BUCKS: 15 minutes of free time. Student chooses an activity 40 BUCKS: ice cream treat 50 BUCKS: no homework for on night (literacy class only)

BOE Binders (Body Of Evidence) Your child will need a 3 inch, 3 ring binder, with a plastic outer sleeve, and dividers. Please send to school, thank you! Student assessments will be filed in the BOE Binder, and Binders will be available for your viewing in my classroom each trimester.

Volunteering Wanted: Parent Classroom Helpers Ms. Johnson’s Class - I love to have parent volunteers in the room! You can file papers, read with students, help with writing, or anything else that needs to be done. I can be a much more effective teacher when I have volunteers to share the load. If you are interested in volunteering, please send a note or email me. Please include the best days and times for you to work in our classroom.
