Surfing Through Data Content: Let’s hit the beach and see how Mileposts can change your mind about the waves of data. This session will explore specific changes in a teacher’s ability to meet the needs of students both behaviorally and academically utilizing data collection and analysis efficiently. We will demonstrate the RtI process as well as classroom and intervention data collection to increase student achievement using real examples of customized learning plans that make those big data waves easy surfing.

Goals of RtI Improve student achievement Customize instruction Provide intervention Use data to determine if interventions are working Have a collaborative team approach to meeting variety of behavior and academic needs

Partner up for: A Summer RtI Meeting! You have 45 minutes to discuss the following 5 kids. The classroom teacher, reading specialists, resource teacher, school psychologists, and counselor are present. The following data is presented by the classroom teachers. With a shoulder partner, discuss: What is the goal? Is progress being made? Is appropriate data being collected? Is there anything missing from the data that needs to be added? What are the next steps for these teachers?

What did you notice about the data: Homework Unit Assessments State Assessments Formative Assessments MAP Data Baseline Data Daily Assignments Progress Monitoring Intervention Data

Challenges of Surfing Through All This Data All in different places Variety of formats Some teachers brought data to RtI meetings; some didn’t Time consuming meetings due to focus on data collection rather than data analysis Everyone collected data differently Teachers were resistant to using data because of the challenges of collecting data

Milepost organizes the waves of data Milepost organizes the waves of data. RtI meetings will run smoother with a focus on data driven decisions based on progress monitoring data.

Milepost: Brings all data to one place Allows for efficient data focused conversations Creates conversations focused on facts rather than hunches Progress monitoring is more timely and accurate due to ease of use

Components of a Customized Learning Plan Target Area with present level of performance Specific Measurable Goal Use specific standards to determine specific skills Instructional Strategies/Intervention Frequency Duration By Whom Parent and Student Responsibilities Progress Notes Documentation of parent notification Fidelity When not making adequate progress

So what do RtI meetings look like with Milepost? Revisit the goal Review the intervention Observe the progress monitoring data Observe additional data if needed: classroom work, benchmark testing Check the fidelity data Discuss Decide if continue or change (add line) Add to the notes Move to next student

Revisit the goal 4th Grade: Samuel is a fourth grader at Roosevelt Elementary.  He is intensive in literature, informational text, and vocabulary knowledge and usage on MAP assessment with an overall score of 192. He currently reads 86 words per minute on a 4th grade passage. Write a measurable goal: 4th Grade: When given a grade level DIBELS reading passage, Sam will be able to read 115 words per minute with 80% or more accuracy three times consecutively.  4th Grade Literacy: By the end of the year, Sam will successfully complete grade level reading with 80% comprehension measured by Leveled Literacy Intervention running records every ten lessons.  4th Grade Behavior: Samuel will maintain a daily percentage of 75% as measured on his behavior chart for work completion, using appropriate language, and positive learning attitude for 10 consecutive days.

So what do RtI meetings look like with Milepost? Revisit the goal Review the intervention Observe the progress monitoring data Observe additional data if needed: classroom work, benchmark testing Check the fidelity data Discuss Decide if continue or change (add line) Add to the notes Move to next student

Review the Intervention Samuel is reading 86 words per minute in the classroom on a grade level passage. He is working with a volunteer to practice reading fluency on a daily basis using his leveled literacy homework review books. Samuel is working on Leveled Literacy Red System Level N 45 minutes daily lessons with the reading specialist. Samuel is charting his own behavior every 30 minutes for the targeted areas of work completion, attitude, and use of appropriate language using a plus or minus sign with a check in and check out format of relationship building with the resource teacher.

So what do RtI meetings look like with Milepost? Revisit the goal Review the intervention Observe the progress monitoring data Observe additional data if needed: classroom work, benchmark testing Check the fidelity data Discuss Decide if continue or change (add line) Add to the notes Move to next student
