TH 402 - Everything You Need to Know About Storyboarding and Prototyping Trina Rimmer Community Manager, Articulate

Let’s Talk About… What is a storyboard? What is a prototype? When and why to storyboard or build a prototype? Several methods of storyboarding and prototyping Tips for using storyboarding and prototyping to build better partnerships Freebies that can help

What is a Storyboard? Acts as a Blueprint Communication Tool Between Designers and Developers Captures Requirements If you're new to e-learning, you may have been told that you should be "storyboarding" or "prototyping" your courses. But what do these terms really mean? Should you be creating storyboards or prototypes for every course-or both? And if so, how do you do it? In this session, you'll learn everything you need to know about the important role storyboarding and prototyping can play in building better e-learning partnerships with clients, project stakeholders, and subject matter experts. Objective ? A clearer understanding of storyboarding and prototyping and how each can be used to ease collaboration ? Real-world examples of when you'd use storyboarding and prototyping ? Tips and free resources you can use for storyboarding and prototyping your courses.

What is a Prototype? Working Model of the Course Feedback Tool Between Designers, Developers, and Clients Embodies Requirements

What do prototypes include?

Then When and Why of Storyboarding and Prototyping (Hint: The when depends on the why) So why would you take the time to storyboard or prototype? This short video provides a good explanation. What made this video so funny/agonizing to watch? (answer: the sandwich person trying to interpret what the client wanted) So, in short, e-learning pros go through the process of storyboarding or prototyping as a way of capturing the course requirements or visualizing features and behaviors Storyboards and prototypes are both communication tools: technical specs to inform the work of partner developers and creative treatment—and to help the client be an effective partner in the process.

Storyboarding vs. Prototyping  Your Priorities Storyboarding Prototyping Detailed blueprint of the course?  Functional model? Iterative design & development? Demonstrate design requirements? Mechanism for capturing requirements? Obtaining client feedback? Getting client sign-off/approval? Before jumping into course development, plan some time to clarify roles and responsibilities on your project team. Sometimes our knee-jerk reaction to a lack of clarity or clear accountability is to create MORE process—which may make your job even more complicated. Instead, try starting with a good conversation to set expectations and get everyone on the same page. One of the best ways to avoid getting stuck in this position is to have a formal project kick-off meeting where all the roles and responsibilities of the project team are clearly defined, including specifying who the decision-makers are and who will be responsible for collecting and reconciling conflicting feedback. Another one of our E-Learning Heroes, Holly MacDonald, suggested a tool that she uses that can help you clarify these roles and responsibilities up front: “...there should only be one client and they are accountable for the content. Maybe a RACI chart? I find these are helpful to frame discussion about ‘what will we do if...’ at the early part of the project.” By taking some time up front to clarify roles and responsibilities you’ll be in a much better position to facilitate conversations between reviewers with a clear escalation path for decision-making.

Let’s Look at Some Methods… White board & post-it notes Content Outline Visual Outline Paper Prototyping Wireframing PowerPoint or Word Storyboard PowerPoint Prototype Functional Prototype built in your authoring tool

Storyboarding & Prototyping Tips Not sure which method you need? Go with a prototype. Identify non-overlapping sections and develop them in parallel.. Embrace the idea of team storyboarding. Keep in mind who you’re storyboarding or prototyping for. Build a style guide before you storyboard or prototype. Design a boilerplate storyboard. Cross referencing is key to effective storyboarding. Use an online review tool or ask SME’s to consolidate their feedback.
