Introduction Vision Based Approach for Non-Contact Cake Detection and Level Measurement for Nutsche Filters in Weather Proof and Explosion Proof Areas

What is a Nutsche Filter? A Nutsche Filter is a machine used to separate solids from a slurry by using positive pressure. Liquid of the slurry is forced through a screen or cloth so that the solids can be collected.

Typical Nutsche Filter

Process Control by Image Analysis Cake detection is determining the transition from liquid to solid “cake”. It is critical to determine this transition so that cracks in the cake do not form. Cracks will result in inconsistent washes and lost product. Canty performs cake detection by image analysis, detecting the transition and sending an output signal for control to produce homogeneous product. Simultaneously, level measurement and surface roughness can be measured with output signals.

Payback Batch times can be optimized to save and increase production time. Cake detection prevents cracking to yield a plug free wash resulting in fewer washes being required. With each wash product is lost. Therefore fewer washes result in higher yield. This can result in a 1-5% increase in output. Payback if a plant produces 10 million dollars per year…5% increase is $500,000 pure profit!!! Level in nutsche can be used to determine the yield of the crystalizer. Level of cake can be measured on the filter wall. The total level at the start of the batch is the batch size. Yield is the total level to the level of the cake.
