Importance of chemistry Chemistry is important because we use chemicals everyday. It is a part of life. we breath and drink chemicals to survive.

Flowers The smell of flowers. Fragrance is chemistry See a Flower. The colors are chemistry The touch of Flower. The structure of chemistry.

Chemistry in the home Everything in your home is chemistry. The wallpaper, shower gel and also cleaning detergents. Tetrachloroethylene (PERC) is used as a common dry-cleaning chemical. Studies have shown that women exposed to this chemical have an increased risk for breast cancer. Short-term exposure may cause skin irritation, dizziness and headaches.

Chemistry in the home (cont.) Alkylphenols : are industrial chemicals used in the production of detergents and other cleaning products. They're also found in personal care products, especially hair products. Mercury : Mercury and metals like iron, nickel, chromium, zinc and lead are found in some thermometers and paint. A woman with breast cancer will find mercury in the tumor.

Cadmium : Cadmium is another metal, used in rechargeable batteries and until recently was widely used in the manufacture of pigments, metal coatings and plastics. It is an estrogen-mimicking chemical that has been linked to early puberty

The Exchange O2 and CO2 The exchange of gases (O2 & CO2) in the lungs happens by simple diffusion: O2 diffusing from the alveoli into the blood & CO2 from the blood into the alveoli.

About Soap Soap is a chemical that mankind has been making for a very long time. You can form a crude soap by mixing ashes and animal fat. How can something so nasty actually make you cleaner? The answer has to do with the way soap interacts with oil-based grease and grime

What does Soap made of? and how does it work? Soaps are sodium or potassium fatty acids salts, produced from the hydrolysis of fats in a chemical reaction called saponification. Each soap molecule has a long hydrocarbon chain, sometimes called its 'tail', with a carboxylate 'head'. In water, the sodium or potassium ions float free, leaving a negatively-charged head.

Cont. Soap is an excellent cleanser because of its ability to act as an emulsifying agent. An emulsifier is capable of dispersing one liquid into another immiscible liquid. This means that while oil (which attracts dirt) doesn't naturally mix with water, soap can suspend oil/dirt in such a way that it can be removed.

Cont. Grease and oil are nonpolar and insoluble in water. When soap and soiling oils are mixed, the nonpolar hydrocarbon portion of the micelles break up the nonpolar oil molecules. A different type of micelle then forms, with nonpolar soiling molecules in the center. Thus, grease and oil and the 'dirt' attached to them are caught inside the micelle and can be rinsed away.

This how the soap works and gets our hands clean

Chemistry is all around us: chemistry in fuels chemistry plays a role in preparation of fuels such that there are many isomerism of alkane ,alkene and alkyne which is also used for preparation of diesel petrol and black ink

Chemistry is all around us: Polymers: Polymers are chemical substances consisting of large number of molecules. used to make our clothes (nylon, cotton ) Plastics are polymers

Chemistry is all around us: Chemicals make our clothes clean The salt that we eat everyday is a chemical Glass is a chemical substance that is used for a variety of purposes ( windows, bulbs)
