PLC evolution SIEMENS Hardware: Not expected any announcement on S7-300/400 series. Still in production with new models coming during these years. Software: TIA portal can be used from V13 and it is recommended for new projects. Step7 can be still used for legacy or existing projects. Recommendations : S7-200 PLCs phased out. Need upgrade of installations New Hardware S7-1X00 PLCs can be used and are supported by ICE In case of upgrades, please target projects that contain PLCs not compatible with TIA portal SCHNEIDER End of production for the Premium PLCs expected before LS2. (end of support 8 years later) New series Modicon M340 and M580 are available and can be installed at CERN Recommendations: Upgrade the Premium high-end to the new M340/580 PLCs depending on your plant. Guidelines will be provided. Twido PLCs phased out. Need upgrade of installations Analyze your Premium installations and decide on their life expectation about their upgrade NEW TENDER in 2016 to validate the present choice and/or open to other brands Technology evolution

National Instruments evolution LabVIEW Version evolution (1 per year supported 4 years) Future version evolution of LabVIEW has a concern on backward compatibility and may induce additional resources for migration National Instruments is committed to keep LabVIEW in production for the next 20 years PXIe and cRIO PXIe Part of the study of CO3 on new frontend selection for Accelerator NI Linux RT and White Rabbit on PXIe NI Contract renewal foreseen in 2017 Technology evolution

Siemens/ETM WINCC OA Evolution Present in many CERN domains >600 production servers Large community of developers/users Need to balance maintenance with evolution Streamline introduction of new versions EYETS : 3.14 LS2: 3.17 (TBC) May require OS upgrades Additional functionalities Improvement of performance for the data archiving for LS2 Improvements of the User Interface (Layout management, …) Remote (web) access already available and need to be tested Use of the Common Name Service Contract amendment for the next 5 years presently under discussion Siemens is committed to develop it for at least for 10 years and to provide support for at least 20 years Technology evolution

OPC Evolution OPC-DA is being phased out -> Need to move to OPC Unified Architecture Decision to develop the OPC servers at CERN Within CERN EN-ICE and ATLAS collaborate to develop QUASAR, a framework which provides consistent implementations of OPC-UA servers Outwith CERN Planned collaborations with CAEN, Wiener and ISEG. CERN to implement ~80% of device logic, expert knowledge required from commercial partners for 20% optimisation. Per-vendor collaboration agreements to be negotiated to agree on goals and responsibilities of collaborations. KT involved to assist with open sourcing QUASAR LGPLv3 licensed. Technology evolution

CAN Evolution Today's Status Plans Various CAN interfaces ISEG: PEAK (PCI & USB) and SYSTEC(USB), Wiener: KVASER(PCI), SYSTEC(USB) ELMB: KVASER(PCI), SYSTEC(USB) Different ways to interface these gateways to the OPC Servers Newly supported and recommended Ethernet-CAN interface: ANAGATE based on Linux running on ARM CPUs Plans Ongoing and LS2 plans (with OPC DA being phased out) Homogenize the CAN hardware and software across CERN to facilitate installation, maintenance and support Drop of the support of the Wrappers (after OPC DA decommissioning) ANAGATE: recommended solution for upgrade and new developments SYSTEC will continue to be supported beyond LS2 LS3 and beyond Recommendations to JCOP to evaluate alternatives to CANbus for future detector electronics Technology evolution

DIP Evolution Evolution of the underlying protocol DIM to ???? The communication system that links CERN Infrastructure and CERN-based experiments : Performant, peer-to-peer communication for non-critical data exchanges. C++, Java, LabVIEW and WINCC OA integration support. More than 44000 publications on the CERN Technical Network. Plans API migration to JAVA 8 Tools to monitor the activity of clients and servers, i.e. the status of the publications Reinforce DIP Name Server functionality : DIP registry and auditing of name server activity Publication approval process : approval workflow, similar to MODESTI, to allow publications in the DIP namespace Separation of namespaces into two domains. Update the DIP protocol backend : Provide signed messaging support (digital signature and certificates support). Update the DIP Browser : Replace the Desktop DIP Browser by a Web DIP Browser. Evolution of the underlying protocol DIM to ???? Technology evolution

We count on this workshop and the continuation to complete the list! JCOP Framework Review of existing functionality Clean up parts not required anymore Evolution of the alarm screen Better filtering capabilities Event replay Reporting for all applications (e.g. number of alarms per day, statistics on data rates, etc) Integration of new drivers required for legacy or new installations (BACnet, IEC61850, etc) Long list of minor new functionalities required by our large community of users. Frameworks We count on this workshop and the continuation to complete the list!

Summary No technological revolution but permanent evolution No major end of life issues even in the HL-LHC perspective Please follow the recommendations. No Major Framework evolution for UNICOS/JCOP Use the frameworks they will make you life easier in case of technological evolutions Follow the supported versions ICE may handle the migration of your applications or assist your team using the standard tools in the migration process (Too?)Many applications to be developed for various groups or by equipment groups that need our support. If you feel that you need support please contact us or your central team ASAP. Some projects need decisions Additional request from this workshop have to be evaluated Close collaboration with experiments teams are mandatory to establish early and adapted planning Careful resources planning and optimization will then be needed to complete the picture.
