Statutory Assessment at SPRINGFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL 1

Aims: To introduce parents to the assessment framework for Years 2 and 6. To help parents in Year 2 and 6 understand how their children are assessed at the end of each Key Stage and why. 2. To help parents in Y2 and Y6 understand the expectations for the year and the impact of results.

Why Assess? Knowing how each pupil is performing allows teachers to plan and help individuals improve. Assessment plays a key role in helping schools to improve outcomes. This in turn promotes improvement at class level, then at school level. Assessments help the next school to plan for pupils – all information is passed to KS 3

The system Prior to 2016 children were allocated a level at the end of KS1 and KS2 to indicate how well they had achieved. Level 2B and Level 4B were average grades for the end of each of the Key Stages. The government changed this system in 2014 and removed levels as an indicator of achievement and progress. Children are now assessed as being at an expected standard in either reading, writing or maths

Formal assessment in Year 6 Potentially an online timed tables test for pupils – needs to be confirmed. However tables need to be learnt up to and including 12x12 Knowledge of tables and mental strategies are key to success in the arithmetic papers From September 2017 children who do not achieve the expected standard will have to resit in Year 7.

KS 2 tests English reading – 1800 – 2300 words English Grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1 – short answer questions Paper 2 – spelling Maths Paper 1 – arithmetic Paper 2 – reasoning Paper 3 – reasoning. All are non-calculator

Year 6 Scaled scores will be used to report national curriculum outcomes. For the KS2 tests a scaled scores of 100 will represent the expected standard Each pupil will receive a raw score, a scaled score and confirmation of whether or not they attained the expected standard. Schools are set floor targets – 85% and progress measures from KS1 to KS2

Reading – 21/50 to achieve a scaled score of 100 – 42% Maths – 60/110 to achieve a scaled score of 100 – 55% Grammar, punctuation and spelling – 43/70 to achieve a scaled score of 100 – 61% The school’s progress measure is based on comparing end of KS1 results from 2013 to results in 2017. ( 2 different systems)
