New Curriculum 2014 A Few Facts.... Last years Year 2 and Year 6 were the first end of Key Stage Tests that are assessing that new content. Assessment has changed quite radically (Final Report of the Commission on Assessment without Levels Sept 2015) 'to often levels became viewed as thresholds and teaching became focussed on getting pupils across the next threshold instead of ensuring they were secure in the knowledge and understanding defined in the National Curriculum Programmes of Study' Current tests are intended to assess whether children have achieved an 'expected' standard at the end of a Key Stage and as such are they ready for the next stage in their educational journey. It is expected that this level of attainment will be slightly higher than in previous years.

SATs have been overhauled in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to reflect the changes to the national curriculum, which was introduced from September 2014. At the end of Year 6, children will take SATs in: Reading English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) Maths

Key Stage 2 Reading The year 6 reading test is a one hour paper. The children will have 3 texts to read and questions on each to answer in this time. They can work through it one text at a time (approximately 20 minutes to read and answer questions on each text). The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test. There will be a variety of question types: Multiple choice Short answer questions - just a few words or a phrase Longer answers, these are worth 2 or 3 marks, and may require a sentence or two often giving an answer and an explanation.

Key stage 2 grammar, spelling and punctuation Children taking Key Stage 2 SATs will sit two separate papers in grammar, spelling and punctuation: Paper 1: a 20-word spelling test taking approximately 15 minutes and worth 20 marks. Paper 2: a grammar, punctuation and vocabulary test worth 50 marks. These two scores are then combined to give an overall score out of 70.

Key Stage 2 Maths The new Key Stage 2 maths test will comprise of three papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, approximately 35 questions worth 40 marks in 30 minutes. Paper 2 & 3: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks in 40 minutes. These are then combined to give an overall score out of 110.

In addition to this children's writing will be assessed by their class teacher and moderated by groups of teachers against a given criteria for meeting the expected standard. Teachers are also required to submit their teacher assessment for Speaking and Listening and Science. The above assessments are made based on the child's 'normal' classroom work.

How will the tests be marked? The papers are sealed at the end of the test and are sent away for external marking. Instead of the old national curriculum levels, children will be given a standardised score – although this may not be communicated to parents. Teacher assessments will also be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements. In addition, your child will receive an overall result saying whether they have achieved the required standard in the tests. The Department for Education aims for 85 per cent of children to reach the required standard. Last year 53% of children nationally reached the expected standard in reading, writing and maths.

How can we support at home? Get involved in homework, especially; mental maths / passport maths /grammar and spelling tasks/ reading. Make sure that you see the homework diary. Regular bed times and routines and nutrition, Being well rested after the weekend really helps! Regular attendance!
