Health Informatics

State Standard 2) Prepare a paper or electronic career profile for at least one occupation in each of the five health science career areas (biotechnology research, therapeutic services, support services, health informatics, and diagnostic services), to be included in the student’s health science portfolio. Draw on print and online sources, such as government occupational profiles, and/or interviews with health care professionals to capture at minimum the following: a. Job description b. Roles and responsibilities c. Essential knowledge and skills needed for the career d. Programs or paths of study available to reach occupational goals, beginning with high school and proceeding through postsecondary e. Required personality traits for the career f. Licensure and credentialing requirements g. Non-educational job requirements such as physical fitness tests, minimum age, and psychological evaluations h. Photographs or digital prints of each career (refer to HOSA Medical Photography guidelines)

Pathway Overview Careers focus on the managerial and business aspects of running a hospital or health care related organization Duties include: admitting patients billing patients educating patients

Health Care Administrator Career description: plan and organize medicine and health services in hospitals, clinics and similar institutions oversee and evaluate work activities of personnel set goals and evaluative criteria

Health Care Administrator Career description: oversee recruitment, hiring and training of personnel create and maintain computerized record management systems

Health Care Administrator Education/training: bachelor’s or master’s degree in health services administration, health sciences or related field Median salary: $86,400

Health Information Coder/Transcriptionist Career description: use transcribing machines to listen and type out recordings by physicians and other healthcare professionals listen to emergency room visits, diagnostic imaging studies, operations and more for transcription purposes

Health Information Coder/Transcriptionist Career description: write out dictated reports and change medical jargon and abbreviations into full forms edit reports and return in printed or electronic form to dictator for review

Health Information Coder/Transcriptionist Education/training: associate’s degree or a one- year certificate program recommended Median salary: $33,310

Medical Information Technologist Career description: gather and manage medical records of hospital and clinic patients manage, gather and report patient information for health requirements and standards guarantee confidentiality of medical records

Medical Information Technologist Career description: oversee patient admission and discharge documents examine records for completeness, accuracy and regulation compliance

Medical Information Technologist Education/training: associate’s degree preferred Median salary: $33,310

Medical Assistant Career description: oversee office and clinical duties following physician orders schedule appointments as well as manage medical records, bills and insurance coding take and record vital signs and medical histories of patients

Medical Assistant Career description: prepare patients for examination, draw blood and administer medications as directed by physician

Medical Assistant Education/training: Median salary: associate’s degree in medical assisting Median salary: $29,100

Health Educator Career description: encourage individual and community health through education gather and review data to identify community health needs help individuals or community in achieving health goals

Health Educator Career description: oversee economic resources for health education programs create and present health education and promotion programs

Health Educator Education/training: Median salary: bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field preferred Median salary: $47,940

Medical Biller Career description: control machines which perform mathematical processes ready statements, bills and invoices for patients copy and post data, make calculations and collect records of transactions

Medical Biller Career description: input data into machines for bill creation teach others to use calculating machines

Medical Biller Education/training: Median salary: college training in medical billing may be required Median salary: $32,880
