Terms in Quechua Ayllu: In the Inca empire, a small rural clan in the Andean highlands, owning its own land, which its members worked in common; in the Spanish empire and later, it meant an Indian village. Inca: Literally, chief; in the pre-Conquest Andean highlands, the ruling dynasty

Sapa Inca Apo Tukrikuk Curacas

Sapa Inca: In the Inca Empire, the God King and Supreme Ruler, the emperor.

Apo: In the Inca empire, a territorial governor; appointed by the emperor and directly under him. There were four such governors, one for each quarter of the empire

Tukrikuk: In the Inca empire, the governor of a province, appointed by the emperor, ruling under an Apo and over curacas in his territory

Curaca: In pre-Conquest Andean highlands, a hereditary chief of one or more ayllus, the small rural communities; in the Spanish empire and later, this meant a local Indian boss.

Mitimaes: In the Inca empire, colonists sent by the emperor to consolidate his control over newly conquered territory.
