Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class CELL THEORY Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class

Cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of all living things The invention of the microscope made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells.

Scientists Hooke- coined the term “cell” by looking at pieces of cork under a microscope. Leeuwenhoek- built a simple microscope. Also observed pond water as well as teeth scrapings under the microscope. Schleiden and Schwann- concluded all living things are composed of cells.

Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells Cells are produced from other cells Cells are the basic unit of function and structure of all living things.

Organelles Organelle- a tiny structure found inside a cell Cell- Smallest living structure Cell wall- a rigid layer of non-living matter that surrounds a plant cell Cell membrane- controls substances that go into and out of cells

Organelles Nucleus- Brain of the cell, Contains the cell’s DNA. Cytoplasm-Produces energy ofr the cell. Builds and transports materials, and stores and recycles wasts. ( jelly-like material) Chromatin- contains genetic material- found inside nucleus. Mitochondria- Produces energy “POWERHOUSE” of the cell.

Organelles ER- Endoplasmic Reticulum- carries proteins throughout the cell. Ribosome- produces proteins Vacuoles- stores food for the cell. Lysosome- breaks down food and recycles old parts Chloroplast-responsible for photosynthesis in plant cells.
