Bellwork: In 27 words describe the Endosymbiotic Theory. HAPPY FRIDAY Bellwork: In 27 words describe the Endosymbiotic Theory. Must use: Prokaryote, Eukaryote, Organelle, Symbiosis (beneficial relationsip)

Unit 2 – Cells/Molecule Transport Chloroplast Mitochondria Nucleus Hypotonic Endoplasmic Reticulum Prokaryote Isotonic Ribosomes Eukaryote Hypertonic Golgi Bodies Endosymbiotic Theory Osmosis Lysosome Cell Membrane Concentration Cytoplasm Permeable Diffusion Impermeable Active Transport Semi-Permeable Facilitated Diffusion Organelle Equilibrium

Essential Question Standard How can I compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells Standard B.4A – Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

Prokaryote: Eukaryote: Alive (8 characteristics), DNA, RNA, Cytoplasm, Ribosomes, Cell Membrane, Microscopic *Cell Wall Make sure you get this info… Prokaryote: Eukaryote: Lacks Nucleus Organelles Lack Membranes DNA is free floating Always unicellular Always bacteria Smaller than Eukaryote Reproduction is asexual (exact copies/clones) Has Nucleus Organelles have Membranes DNA is in the Nucleus Can be unicellular or multicellular Plants, Animals, Fungi, Protists Much Larger than Prokaryote Reproduction can be asexual (clones) or sexual (variations)

Title: Endosymbiotic Theory Essential Question: New Topic/Page Page____ Title: Endosymbiotic Theory Essential Question: What does the Endosymbiotic Theory attempt to explain?

There are many theories about how the first Eukaryotes emerged. The Endosymbiotic Theory states that the organelles of eukaryotes originated as a symbiosis between separate single-celled prokaryotes.

Break it down…. Endo = inside Symbiosis = a beneficial relationship Fat Tony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBjD4A7R2xU Endo. Theory with Playdoh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgaGh9-mFnQ

Endosymbiotic Theory Prokaryotic Cell #1 NEW Eukaryotic Cell Cell #2 Cell #2 (mitochondria) Cell #2 (chloroplast) NEW Eukaryotic Cell

Explains how organelles were most likely formed Also explains why organelles are membrane-bound

Cell Organelles and their Functions

New Topic/Page Page___ Title: Organelles How do organelles help the cell maintain homeostasis?

Two Types of Cells EUKARYOTE PROKARYOTE

Cell Diagrams -Number the boxes going horizontal Front Side – Color what the arrows are pointing to Back Side – Label

Left side– Cell Diagrams Nucleolus Cytoplasm Rough ER Ribosome Cell Membrane Mitochondria Lysosome Smooth ER Golgi Bodies (Apparatus) Vacuole Flagella Nucleus

Nucleolus Largest structure inside the nucleus Ribosome synthesis 1.

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum A network of membranes throughout the cytoplasm of the cell. Aids in assembly of ribosomes. 2.

3. Cell Membrane The cell membrane holds the cell together Semi-permeable Allows substances into and out of the cell. 3.

Lysosome act as the waste disposal system of the cell by digesting unwanted materials 4.

Golgi apparatus Responsible for sorting, packaging, and shipping the proteins produced in the ER.   5.

6. Nucleus The nucleus controls the cell. It contains the cell’s DNA (genetic info and instructions for making proteins) 6.

Cytoplasm the watery gel inside a cell. It holds the ORGANelles. 7.

8. Ribosomes Play an important role in the synthesis of proteins. Some ribosomes are found in the cytoplasm, but most are attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. Found in both Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes 8.

9. Mitochondria Organelle that produces energy for the cell. The “power house” 9.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum A network of membranes throughout the cytoplasm of the cell. It helps to move materials around the cell. 10.

Vacuoles Vacuoles are spaces in the cytoplasm where food, water and chemicals are stored 11.

12. Flagella Can be found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells Used for movement 12.

13. Cell Wall They make the cell strong and rigid-support Cell Walls are found plants, fungi, bacteria and some protists NEVER found in animal cells 13.

Homework Page 18 - Cell City Analogy

Homework: Produce your own cell analogy for the organelles. Example Function Organelle represented How they are related Mitochondria Ribosomes Nucleus ER Golgi Apparatus Protein Cell membrane Lysosome Nucleolus
