February 3rd, 1900 Dear, Lolo I am sorry I had not been sending postcards for so long. I have been trying to catch up with the changes made to British Columbia. It hurts my heart to read that Lola has passed away. I wish I could have seen her before her age caught up. Lolo, I hope you have read my previous postcards prior to reading this one, it will help you understand. The man I had met in my previous postcards, has now become my husband, his riches and skin colour had given me the opportunity to have a child. My daughter’s name is ‘Rose Vincent’, she was born on May 9th 1899. She is now 2 years old and she is beautiful. The day I had met my husband at the train tracks he lathered me in presents and complements, and after a few months, he had proposed with a silver ring. Vincent Dela Cruz 1234 Mayon st Manila, Philippines July 9th, 1907 Dear Lolo, I have seen more and more immigrants from Asia being extremely frustrated with the Canadian Government due to the rule that was placed by Frank Oliver, the Federal Minister of the Interior, whom agreed that all non- white immigrants should be restricted from entering British Columbia. As a South Asian this rattles me. I remember being in their positions and I think the Government should be thinking about how we can be uniting as a province rather than causing riots from Chinatown and the Japanese areas of British Columbia. The riots have been terrifying, I fear my child will not grow up in a safe environment where she can feel safe. My age has restricted me from doing most jobs. My husband is carrying us with his wealth from his job at the fisheries. He works hard to keep us balanced and prepared. I pray I will stay well and keep my family safe from harm. January 4th, 1911 Dear Lolo, There have been advancements in technology that I have frequently noticed. It appears that there are more motorized vehicles called ‘cars’ that are roaming the streets every month. I had never seen anything like those extraordinary moving machines before. The cars have become more affordable over the past years, we might invest in one since it looks beneficial to us since my husband goes to work at very early hours and taking a car would improve his attitude when he goes to work. My daughter is now 8 years old and she looks exactly like her father. All I hope for is a successful future in my dearest Rose. We are already saving for Rose’s education and housing. Recently I haven’t been feeling my 100%, I only hope this is a cold, my family needs me more than ever. Please keep me in your prayers Lolo. Vincent Dela Cruz 1234 Mayon st Manila, Philippines May 9th, 1914 Dear Lolo, Today is my daughter’s 11th birthday. She looks so mature and strong, it’s as if I’m looking into a mirror from myself when I first came to Canada. Her spirit and creativity is what keeps me confident everyday, knowing my daughter will have the best future she can possibly have. My illness has grown stronger over the years. The work has taken a toll on my body and my age doesn't help the pain from this sickness. I have been stuck in bed for weeks, my husband has be worried sick about me, but I think it’s just my time. I still have faith in Canada and the capability it has to expand as a country and treat it’s citizens like equal humans. My dream is to see Canada as a united country where anyone can have a job doing anything they want to do, without being discriminated, cussed at, or physically abused due to their colour or gender.
