Graphic design project words

Graphic design is made up of 2 main components Typography Image

Typography Is the use of text in an image. The term encompasses the Type face (font) layout and size. Sometimes typography is all you need to communicate your ideas effectively. Here are some examples....

Neville Brody Neville Brody is a well know graphic designer who has created many of his own type faces within his work. He also is widely know for designing ‘The Face’ magazine and fetish record label. His work inspired a whole generation of graphic designers.

Image. Image in design is also important. Image is there to back up the text and add dimension to the work. Images can be literal or slightly subversive.

Frank Chimero

Task Your task is to produce a hand made piece of graphic design. You will all be given an individual word, From this you will create a visual response. It must convey the meaning/ feeling of the word and be Visually exciting.

Week 1 You will be given your word. You need to brainstorm 6 ideas for your piece. Three purely typographic three image based. choose an appropriate type face from the ones provided. ( if you wish to make your own you are welcome, use an existing one as a base) Trace through the text onto the tracing paper. THINK ABOUT COMPOSITION.

extension Create a purely text based version of your piece using the word repeated many times. Again in square format

Home work Find some visual resources for your word. Pictures, alternative type faces, previous examples. Anything that will help you with your piece. You will need them for next weeks lesson.

Print. Week 2 We are using mono-printing to create our imagery. After watching a demo. Plan out how you are going to apply your images. (look back at your composition ideas) You will have 4 copy’s of your text to work on practice first before you begin.
