The British Isles history The United Kingdom has a long history. The first two countries forming the Union were England and Wales in 1536. In 1707 Scotland joined the Union, while Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom.

The British Isles language In modern times, people speak English throughout the British Isles. There are still people who speak the older European languages, Welsh, and Irish. There are six spoken languages that are considered to be native to the British Isles plus two local accents.
