Smart technology: where next in Public Transport? Making best use of Information and Communications Technologies Smart technology: where next in Public Transport? Richard Poynder Chairman, The Smartex Group 21st September 2010

IT WAS IN THE SUNDAY EXPRESS SO IT MUST BE TRUE

Would that be the DfT’s vision from about 10 years ago…? Government rumours ON 5 SEPTEMBER The Sunday Express devoted its front page to the suggestion that: “A plastic smartcard acting as a single ticket for all buses, trains and trams in Britain is to be rolled out by the Government to help reduce fares.” “The smartcard was last night said to be “radical and visionary” and would allow seamless travel on one ticket between John O’Groats and Land’s End,” the paper added enthusiastically. “It will be based on the Oyster card used on London’s Tube, bus and rail routes and which has driven down the cost of travel in the capital.” Would that be the DfT’s vision from about 10 years ago…? A seamless, multi-modal smart card…blah blah …but the rumours persist

WHY SMART CARDS?

Why smart cards in public transport? Smart cards are the current token of choice Secure Handy Hold lots of stuff: “one card can do all” Make honest men of the operators Automation saves money The Government wanted to use them Everywhere else IS using them

THE PROBLEMS

Complex deregulated environment in England Complex fare structures The problems we face Complex deregulated environment in England Complex fare structures No national strategy for e-payments London ITSO The banks The mobile operators Transport operators

Not Flipping Compatible

But NFC will happen because we the people will demand it The impact of NFC Huge Death of cards? When? What? How? But NFC will happen because we the people will demand it

BANKS

The impact of bank contactless EMV cards The banks have always handled payments The banks have discovered contactless technology They need a winner to add to the coffee shops They’ve spotted public transport as the saviour Their cards do payment, not ticketing – sorta TfL (a.k.a. Cubic) wants to use them Few operators outside London want them … but sQuid is making in-roads … and watch ECEBS Debate: the MNOs could do it all without Visa and MasterCard

.. and finally THE CHOICES

The medium The system The choices Cards NFC Barcodes Something else Oyster nationally: “The Government solution?” Bank contactless EMV sQuid ECEBS Regional proprietary systems Operator-specific proprietary systems
