genocide case study: Syria By: Christina fernandes & Carla rosales

The cause and conflict In 2011, Syrian president bashar al-assad began a brutal crackdown on peaceful protests throughout the country. The Use of military power such as tanks and artillery (large-caliber guns) against protesters and torture and execution of children led to a civil war. August 21, 2013, chemical weapons were used.

Since the genocide 220,000+ killed since march 2011 when the conflict began. 2,000+ barrel bombs filled with metal shards dropped on civilians. 4 million refugees.. One in every six Syrians has fled the country.

The people/sides involved President bashar al-assad Assad regime – the president’s military army Syrian men, women and children President Obama acceptance of syrian refugees

Resolution Unfortunately the conflict is still occurring.. Urge President Obama to increase the number of Syrian refugees accepted into the United States and work to make sure that relief efforts are fully funded. The international community concluded that only a political solution could end the conflict in Syria.

Prevent further genocide Inform people of the problem in order for them to understand Sound the Alarm and demand action - we must speak up and demand that government leaders make the right choices

Prevent further genocide Stop the enablers - follow the money and apply public pressure to shame and stop companies and governments that finance mass violence Punish those who committed the genocide

Prevent further genocide pt. 2 Make human rights and genocide prevention core values in u.s. foreign policy “in April 2012, president barack Obama announced a series of actions to ensure the united states is better able to prevent and respond to genocide and mass atrocities. The landmark announcement came after years of pressure from activists and organizations working to ensure that the united states’ failure to adequately respond to past atrocities will not be repeated.”

We pledge 1.  I pledge to do my part to end genocide: the intentional destruction, in whole or in part, of a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. 2. I commit myself never to be a passive bystander to genocide anywhere. 3. I promise to report any signs of the approach of a genocide to government officials, to the press, and to organizations that can take action to prevent it. 4. I will protest the acts of planners and perpetrators of genocide. I will not remain silent about their incitement of hate crimes, mass murders and other acts of genocide.

We pledge pt. 2 5. I will assist the victims of genocide and will help them escape from their killers. I will support the victims with humanitarian relief. 6. I will not stop my protests against a genocide until that genocide is stopped. 7. I will support lawful measures to prevent, suppress and punish the crime of genocide in accordance with the Genocide Convention.
