UTA010: ENGINEERING DESIGN – II L T P Cr -­‐-­‐-­‐ 1 0 2 5 (6 self effort hours per week) Course Objectives: To develop design skills according to a Conceive-­‐Design-­‐ Implement-­‐ Operate (CDIO) compliant methodology. To apply engineering sciences through learning-­‐by-­‐ doing project work. To provide a framework to encourage creativity and innovation. About the Project The Project will facilitate the design, construction and analysis of a “Mangonel”. In addition to some introductory lectures, the content of the students’ work during the semester will consist of: the manufacturing and assembly of a Mangonel from a Bill Of Materials (BOM), detailed engineering drawings of parts, assembly instructions, and few prefabricated parts; the development of a software tool to allow the trajectory of a “missile” to be studied as a function of various operating parameters; Copyright 2013-­‐2014 Alpana Agarwal, ECED 14/01/16 14:40

About the Project a structural analysis of certain key components of the Mangonel for static and dynamic stresses using values of material properties which will be experimentally determined; the development of a micro-­‐electronic system to allow the angular velocity of the throwing arm to be determined; testing the Mangonel; redesigning the throwing arm of the Mangonel to optimise for distance without compromising its structural integrity; an inter-­‐group competition at the end of the semester. What is Catapult/Mangonel? Used in the medieval period to throw projectiles at a castle's walls Types – Siege, Mangonel and Trebuchet The mangonel threw projectiles on a lower trajectory and at a higher velocity than the trebuchet, with the intention of destroying walls, rather than hurling projectiles over them. What is Mangonel? Mangonel is derived from the Greek mágganon, meaning "engine of war” But mangonel may also be indirectly referring to the mangon, a French hard stone found in the south of France.
