Straight to the Points of Interest…

Middle School Mathematics

The titles of the middle school mathematics courses have been changed as follows: Course Number Title New Title Assessment 1205010 M/J Mathematics 1 Grade 6 Mathematics Grade 6 FSA Mathematics 1205020 M/J Mathematics 1 Advanced Grade 6 Mathematics Advanced 1205040 M/J Mathematics 2 Grade 7 Mathematics Grade 7 FSA Mathematics 1205050 M/J Mathematics 2 Advanced Grade 7 Mathematics Advanced 1205070 M/J Pre-Algebra Grade 8 Pre-Algebra Grade 8 FSA Mathematics

2015-2016 Course Descriptions Grade 6 Mathematics Advanced will be revised to contain all the 6th grade standards and certain 7th grade standards (less than half). Grade 7 Mathematics Advanced will be revised to contain all the 7th grade standards and certain 8th grade standards (less than half). Grade 8 Pre-Algebra Advanced will be created to contain all the 8th grade standards and certain Algebra 1 standards (less than half).

Liberal Arts Mathematics

The financial literacy standards from the 2007 Next Generation Sunshine State Standards have been removed from the 1207300 Liberal Arts Mathematics 1 and 1207310 Liberal Arts Mathematics 2 courses. New financial literacy standards are included with the social studies standards and placed in the appropriate courses. Bright Futures, SUS, and NCAA

Algebra 2

The A2 code in the Course Code Directory (CCD) to signify Algebra II and its equivalents no longer exists. Regardless, the following courses will trigger the statewide, standardized Algebra II End-of-Course (EOC) assessment. 1200330 Algebra II 1200340 Algebra II Honors 1209825 Pre-AICE Mathematics 3 IGCSE Level 1200395 IB Middle Years Program Algebra II

Equally Rigorous

There is no “EQ” code in the CCD for mathematics to signify “equally rigorous.” To meet the requirement of statistics or an equally rigorous mathematics course to receive the scholar designation, the mathematics credit must be attained by successfully completing a Level 3 course, or a college, credit-bearing mathematics course.

Florida Statutes

The law is the decision-maker concerning student requirements, not the Department. Each school district has a General Counsel to interpret the law. When in doubt, read the law. Additionally, many school districts have requirements beyond the law.

Standards and Assessment

Standards Course descriptions tell which standards are in a particular course. Standards define what students should understand, know, and be able to do. Standards tell what to teach, not how to teach it. Standards are not curriculum.

www.FSAssessments.org

Test Item Specifications Florida Standards content and format for item writers and reviewers alignment of items information about the scope and function The Test Item Specifications are: based on the Florida Standards found in the course descriptions on CPALMS defines the content and format of the test and test items for item writers and reviewers indicates the alignment of items with the Florida Standards provide all stakeholders with information about the scope and function of the Florida Standards Assessment They guide the development of scenarios and items but do no tell you what to teach. Test Item Specifications are not identical to course descriptions. The Test Item Specifications can be found at www.fsassessments.org. Click “Educators,” “Educator Resources,” and “Spring 2015 FSA ELA and Mathematics.”

Where is the Line? 25 overlapping standards in A1 and A2 How to teach standards is a local decision. Guidelines for item writers are not meant to restrict instruction. Consider the Test Item Specifications to be sure you’re covering at the very least what is found there, BUT remember and consider the students’ mathematical future.

Formulas and Conversions

Formulas Presented Note certain things. -intent of standards -notation of the formulas

Conversions will be provided in a pop-up window for the grades 5-12 CBT and as a conversion sheet for grade 4. Customary Conversions 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet 1 mile = 5,280 feet 1 mile = 1,760 yards 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces 1 pint = 2 cups 1 quart = 2 pints 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds Metric Conversions 1 meter = 100 centimeters 1 meter = 1000 millimeters 1 kilometer = 1000 meters 1 liter = 1000 milliliters 1 gram = 1000 milligrams 1 kilogram = 1000 grams Time Conversions 1 minute = 60 seconds 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 day = 24 hours 1 year = 365 days 1 year = 52 weeks

Resources and Communication

We Can Do This, Florida! K-5 Video Series The State of Florida - in partnership with State Farm - has collected video clips of mathematics instruction from across the state. This statewide initiative, named "We Can Do This, Florida!", is designed to assist teachers, parents and the overall Florida community in understanding that students of all races, ethnicities, and socio-economic backgrounds are able to master the Florida Standards. Thus, specific standards are identified and addressed through this initiative. Students are showcased as they use precise language to explain their evidence (visually, verbally, in writing, etc.) that supports their learning. Using an array of strategies will not only help parents understand that the students can do this but also give them a resources to assist their child(ren) immediately. These videos also model best practices in teaching and learning that can be emulates in other classrooms across Florida.  These current videos showcase K-5 instruction, but there are more currently under production to showcase our secondary classrooms.
