Tuesday Bell Ringer (EVEN) This week you will work on writing an autobiography of your life. This may be entered as a language arts grade this quarter! An incomplete autobiography will result in a “M” in the gradebook if not turned in this week. Today you will write about your childhood. Remember to include where you were born, who your parents are, and important events from your childhood. If you finish early, work on your narrative story from last week. The narrative story may be taken as a grade this quarter. This should have been turned in last week. 1. Have a pencil ready for the day. 2. Get a piece of loose leaf paper for the autobiography if you haven’t already started. Don’t forget vocabulary test Friday!

Which word has a positive connotation? Figurative Language- unusual comparisons between things or ideas that help readers imagine a subject in a vivid or unexpected way Simile Metaphor Personification

Modeled Lesson 13 pg. 130 disorientated What does the prefix mean? What context clue can help you define the word? In the last sentence, the author compares the watch to the sun to suggest how Gabriel feels about the watch. How does this comparison suggest Gabriel's feelings about the watch? Write your answer on the lines below. The author uses the simile to show Gabriel’s feelings about the watch Words such as golden, tiny, and sun have a positive connotation, so the simile helps the reader understand that watch is special.

Modeled Lesson 13 pg. 131 helpful dependable What does the suffix of each word mean? Identify any similes and metaphors you can find in the second paragraph. How do they help show how the boy feels about the watch? The phrase “had a new treasure” is a metaphor. The watch is being compared to treasure. This shows that the boy treasures the watch because he compared it to treasure. He also shows he treasures the watch by carefully tucking it into his pocket.

Review Figurative Language: -Similes -Metaphors -Personification Does the word “junk” have a negative or positive connotation? What is a word you could use instead to give the word a positive connotation? Remember author’s will use certain words to convey a feeling in the text. Understanding word choice will help you identify the author’s attitude toward a character or subject in the text.

Guided Practice L13 pg. 132 1st read Read the text silently and be prepared to answer the following questions: 1. Who is the “he” referred to in line 3 of the poem? 2. What are the “tunes” in line 2? 3. What do you think the poet means by saying the lightening “showed” a beak and claw? Think about what they are describing about the shape of the lightening. 4. In your own words describe the progress of the storm in order. First, Next, Then,

Guided Practice L13 pg. 132 2nd read What words in the last 4 stanzas convey a feeling of danger? Underline the words as you reread. For example, threatening and menace in the 1st stanza convey a feeling of danger. Identify a simile used in the poem and CIRCLE it. Identify an example of personification used in the poem and BOX it in.

Guided Practice L13 pg. 132 video open in e #1 and #2 Numbered Heads Together Identify two forms of figurative language that are used in lines 7 and 8. Explain what these lines mean. Use two details from the poem in your response. The speaker says the dust scoops “like hands,” so this is a simile. She also says that it “throws away” the road, which is personification. It means that the wind has carried so much dust into the air that road cannot be seen.
