A connected home solution Smarter Life A connected home solution 1

Innovation Case Study: Smartlife by iiNet Service Provider SmartLife is a new software service that is supported by iiNet’s Budii hardware platform. SmartLife will help manage electricity consumption. It controls home appliances locally and remotely through an intuitive interface. iiNet demonstrated the innovation at CeBIT, Australia's largest ICT event in May 2013. SmartLife will also allow users to have a visual reference for the amount of power that individual appliances are using and when. The software can also help users to forecast and manage their electricity bill for the next quarter. Future versions will give greater control of appliances as well as integration with home monitoring cameras, motion sensors, locks, and other devices which are currently under development. Service Success Metrics Smartlife is one of the innovative features that the Budii platform has to offer. The platform and the associated services will play a key role in attracting new customers, reducing churn and increasing ARPU. iiNet has not yet finalised the commercial launch date for Smartlife, so no connection figures are yet available. However, in Australia, Connection Research (2012) estimated that the total addressable market for household energy management services and hardware is $13 billion per annum. 2

Innovation Case Study: Smartlife by iiNet Differentiation SmartLife will allow users to manage and control home electricity usage through a centralised communications hub. iiNet can update the software for Budii’s modem, home smartphone and tablet device remotely. So customers will be able to take advantage of new software as soon as it becomes available. Smartlife uses the already-at-home hardware platform Budii, primarily used as an entertainment and network hub. This differentiates Smartlife from other standalone smart home solutions such as Revolv or Staples connect hub as these solutions need dedicated infrastructure which customers need to purchase separately. Value Generation iiNet Budii platform with features such as Smartlife is definitely a mass market offer to differentiate iiNet’s product for attracting new customers, reducing churn and increasing ARPU. Rising energy cost is a major concern for most households in Australia. Smartlife can play a key role helping users to take control over residential electricity consumption and take advantage of energy saving strategies.

Innovation Case Study: Smartlife by iiNet Technical Overview iiNet launched the Budii hardware platform in February 2013. Budii is a comprehensive NBN-ready, entertainment and network hub, home smartphone, and tablet all-in-one package. It utilises the popular Android operating system, which allows users to personalise the phone handset and select from thousands of online apps. Budii also includes technology such as ZigBee, a relatively new low-power wireless technology designed to mesh individual devices, and which can be used to trigger SMS or email alerts from ZigBee sensors. This technology provides a secure means for the home appliances to connect to each other and pass information. SmartLife will interface with appliances via separate ZigBee-enabled wall plugs. Budii will also be able to wirelessly connect with any home appliances that have ZigBee incorporated in them. iiNet Labs has identified a range of other software opportunities for the Budii platform, and is planning the next generation of the Budii and of peripherals to support SmartLife. 4

Innovation Case Study: Smartlife by iiNet Service Provider and Partners iiNet is Australia's second largest DSL Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the leading challenger in the telecommunications market. They maintain their own super-fast broadband network and support over 1.7 million broadband, telephony and Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) services nationwide. CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. The objective CSIRO’s Digital Productivity and Services Flagship is to unleash the potential of broadband through innovation and drive productivity. iiNet has partnered with CSIRO’s Digital Productivity and Services Flagship to deliver innovative broadband-enabled services for their customers. The partnership highlights CSIRO and iiNet’s thought leadership in the digital economy space. Smartlife is the product of iiNet’s strong and collaborative partnership with the CSIRO through their Digital Productivity and Services Flagship.
