COMPARE AND ORDER FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, AND PERCENTS

Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals & Percents Fractions, decimals, and percents are different ways to write the same number. We can switch back and forth between forms to help us solve problems more efficiently.

Compare and Order Fractions, Decimals & Percents To compare fractions, decimals, and percents, it is easier to write all the numbers as percents or decimals. Decimals and percents are normally the easiest! Remember to put all numbers back into their original form for the answer.

Example #1 Order ¾, 0.735 and 70% from least to greatest ¾ = 0.75 (this is a benchmark fraction, but you can divide the numerator by the denominator if necessary) 0.735 = 0.735 (already a decimal) 70% = 0.7 (dividing 70 by 100, which moves the decimal place two times to the left)

Example #1, continued Let’s add zero placeholders to even the field. 0.750 0.735 0.700 Remember to put them back in their original form: 70%, 0.735, ¾ Now line up your decimals: 0.75 0.735 0.7 Now, it’s easy to see the order: 0.7, 0.735, 0.75

Practice Time – do this with a partner! Which of the following is in order from least to greatest? a) 1 5 , 28%, 1 4 , 0.23 b) 1 5 , 0.23, 1 4 , 28% c) 0.23, 1 4 , 28%, 1 5 d) 1 4 , 1 5 , 0.23, 28%

One More With Your Partner! Which of the following choices are in order from greatest to least? a) 82%, 4/8, 0.26, 77%, 2/3 b) .26, 4/8, 2/3, 77%, 82% c) 4/8, .26, 77%, 82%, 2/3 d) 82%, 77%, 2/3, 4/8, .26

On Your Own – order from least to greatest 𝟓 𝟔 , 0.725, 85%, 𝟐 𝟑 𝟑 𝟖 , 37%, 0.38, 0.374 𝟐 𝟑 , 0.725, 𝟓 𝟔 , 85% 37%, 0.374, 𝟑 𝟖 , 0.38
