Presentation transcript:

Mrs. Matheny’s Classroom Newsletter This month, we are learning… Upcoming Events… In reading, we are learning our sight words. Please make sure you are practicing the word lists – popcorn, cookie, etc. Remember your child can earn a trophy at the end of all the sight word list. We are blending word parts and segmenting word parts. We are blending words parts to discover if a word is a real word or a nonsense word. (pet vs. jit) We are reading and retelling the stories we have read from the beginning to the end. In math, we are learning to add and subtract within 10. We are learning to recognize, write and understand numbers 11 – 20 as ten and some more. (ex. 15 is ten with 5 more) We are learning 3-D shapes and reviewing 2-D shapes. We are discussing how they are alike and different using number of sides and corners. We are solving addition and subtraction word problems. We are understanding <, >, and =, when counting 2 set of objects. We will count to 100. In writing, we are continuing to write simple stories using our sight words and letter sounds. We are leaving space between our words and using periods at the end of the sentences. We are drawing detailed pictures that match our stories. We are writing opinion stories and giving reasons to support our opinions (ex, I like to eat apples because they are crunchy and sweet.) In science, we are learning about the changes in the weather and how things move. In social studies, we are learning about our friends by writing stories about them after we interview them. We are learning about Saint Patrick’s Day and kites. March 10th – School store open March 12th- Daylight Saving time begins (set clocks forward 1 hour) March 13th – Book Fair begins, Skate Night March 15th – Roger Day Field trip to A.L. Happy Birthday this month to … Jhoana March 29th Take Home Readers We will begin sending home take home readers next week. This is a book that your child will read with you at home. I will read the book with your child at school and then your child will bring it home to read with you. When your child returns it to school, I will listen to them read it once more. Then your child will receive a new book. The books will be appropriate for your child’s reading level. The red group will receive their books on Mondays and will return their books on Mondays. The blue group will be on Tuesdays, yellow group on Wednesdays and green group on Thursdays. Please make every effort to listen to your child read and practice the words in these books.
