Teams…Strengths and Challenges What are the biggest challenges regarding or related to team building? What infects and disrupts teams? What builds and defines strong teams?

Icebreaker—Building rapport, strengthening communication PeOPLE BINGO Icebreaker—Building rapport, strengthening communication Super simple, and very effective for introducing people to one another Can be played with folks attempting to get to know each other OR people who’ve known each other for a while, but are interested in learning more Once someone has achieved “BINGO” they have not only gotten to know several people well, but they can be awarded with some “prize” Another concept for winning could be once a person has completed 10 squares—they’ve won Use the same concept for traditional BINGO, however spaces are filled with statements about people Statements can be very descriptive or pretty generic (depending on how well you know those you’re playing with)

Icebreaker—Building relationships, strengthening communication Question Ball Icebreaker—Building relationships, strengthening communication Throw the ball to a random participant and ask them to answer the question on their “right index finger” or their left thumb Continue playing until each participant has been able to share at least one thing about themself Super simple, and very effective for introducing people to one another Can be played with folks attempting to get to know each other OR people who’ve known each other for a while, but are interested in learning more Blow up a large beach ball and write statements on each section that ANYONE can answer Stand in a large circle with everyone, decent distance apart to throw the ball to one another

Icebreaker—strengthening communication Salt & Pepper Icebreaker—strengthening communication A sheet of paper for every person Make a list of pairs such as salt and pepper, male and female, day and night. Write one of each pair on a piece of paper. Tape one paper on the back of each person (so the person cannot see the paper). When you hear go, everyone must walk around asking yes or no questions in order to find out what word is taped to your back. Once you find your pair, sit down and learn three interesting facts about one another.

SCATTERGORIES Icebreaker—Building Teamwork, Sharing a common goal, Understanding value & contribution Similar to the common party game, but with a group/team twist Instead of using one letter and a list of established categories, this activity is intended to use words or terms commonly associated with a department or program and create an acrostic summary using the letters of the word. An example: C – Courses O - Orientation L – Lifestyle L – Literature E - Education G – Grades E – Experience Work with your team or individually to think creatively about how you would make an acrostic for the associated words and how they connect to your common goals, values, and contributions.

Questions / FEEDBACK / Intended Outcomes These activities all have unique intended goals and outcomes. Some to improve communication, some to highlight how different individuals understand and value their roles and contributions, and some to simply get to know one another on a deeper level, so as to build trust and rapport. The objective is for each member of a team or unit to get to know one another as unique and contributing individuals. Use these activities to better understand and appreciate everyone's strengthens and comfort zones, but challenge one another to also support and develop other areas as well. Find ways to relate to one another, unite, build trust and relationships that will establish a collective team, and step outside of the box and your roles to see value in your work and others.
