Silver Nitrate Lab – Day 1 Limiting Reactants

Evaluation/Assessment: Objective: Today I will be able to: Calculate the mass of silver produced when reacting copper with silver nitrate Apply stoichiometric ratios to finding the mass of reactants and products Determine the limiting and excess reactants in a chemical reaction Evaluation/Assessment: Informal Assessment – Monitoring student interactions as they complete the practice and the lab Formal Assessment – Analyzing student responses to the lab and the limiting reactant practice Common Core Connection Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning Attend to precision Use appropriate tools strategically

Warm - Up What is a limiting reactant? What is an excess reactant? Make a prediction: If you react a 3.2 g copper wire with 0.42 g of AgNO3, what will be the limiting reactant?

Objective Today I will be able to: Calculate the mass of silver produced when reacting copper with silver nitrate Apply stoichiometric ratios to finding the mass of reactants and products Determine the limiting and excess reactants in a chemical reaction

Homework Work on Mole Project Due March 11 (Mole Sample Problem)

Agenda Warm-Up Silver Nitrate Lab Safety Day 1: Silver Nitrate Lab Limiting Reactant Practice Exit Ticket

Silver Nitrate Lab Day 1

Day 1 Day 1- Today we are setting up the reaction Day 2 – Filtering the silver and drying the silver Day 3 – Finding the mass of silver produced and calculations

Silver Nitrate Lab Safety Wear goggles, aprons and closed toe shoes in the lab Do not spill silver nitrate on your hand. It will stain your hands. One person from the group will handle the silver nitrate and wear gloves Label test tube with Copper and Silver Nitrate with a piece of tape. After the reaction has been set up place test tube in the designated test tube rack

Silver Nitrate Lab Record the mass of your groups copper wire Record the mass of silver nitrate used We are only using 0.4 g of Silver Nitrate The person handling the silver nitrate must wear gloves Label the ring stand and the bin you are using with masking tape Fill out the class data table

Limiting Reactant Practice After completing the lab set up, complete the limiting reactant practice at your desk. We will work on the practice over the next 3 classes.

Exit Ticket In 10 words or less summarize what you did in lab today
