Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! YAHWEH (or JEHOVAH) Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

Name of God of the Month (September) God is JEHOVAH (YAHWEH). The name of the independent, self-complete being—“I AM WHO I AM”—only belongs to Jehovah God. Our proper response to Him is to fall down in fear and awe of the One who possesses all authority.

Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! ADONAI (Lord, Master) ---- God, our Adonai, calls all of God’s people to acknowledge themselves as His servants, claiming His right to reign as Lord of our lives.

Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.

Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! LORD (Yawheh) is his name Lord (Adonai) is his title “O Yahweh, our Master/Lord”

When it comes to the Reality of God. . . David begins (and ends) this psalm of praise by declaring the majesty of the name of the Lord in all the earth! He is the Sovereign One, the Master, the Lord -- whose name is Yahweh! When it comes to the Reality of God. . . He is the ULTIMATE Reality! The rest of reality begins and ends with God!

transcends = to climb above or beyond Psalm 8:1b You have set your glory above the heavens. “transcends” above/beyond to climb transcends = to climb above or beyond

INFINITELY! God is transcendent! God is above and beyond the created, natural realm which He made and in which we live! And just how far above and beyond? INFINITELY! (the distance cannot be measured!)

Psalm 8:3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…

- launched September 5, 1977 - currently approx. 13 billion miles from earth - traveling at a speed of 17,000 miles/second - distance covered in a year is 325 million miles (or approximately half a light- year every 10,000 years.) Voyager 1

4.3 light years away! Light year = distant light travels in a year at 186,000 miles per second! Centauri (Sirius)

At its current speed (17,000 miles per second), how long would it take Voyager 1 to travel to Centauri? 100 yrs. 5,000 yrs. 25,000 yrs. 30 or so years to get to the outer limits of our solar system and then 70,000 years to get to the nearest star beyond!! D. 70,000 yrs.

All of this is the work of God’s fingers! 200 billion stars! Milky Way only one of 100 billion galaxies! Furthest galaxy approx. 13 billion light years away! The Milky Way Galaxy All of this is the work of God’s fingers!

Psalm 8:3-4a When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man?

GOD is BIG Man is small MAN is BIG God is small

Psalm 8:3-4a  When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man?

David understood the dual reality that … God is BIG and MAN is small!

Psalm 8:4 What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Psalm 8:5-7 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

Genesis 1:26-28 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

1. Since God is such an awesome God He is WORTHY of our utmost praise and allegiance! How often do you praise God throughout your week? Do you think about Him at all from Monday – Saturday? Or is he basically absent from your thoughts?

1. Since God is such an awesome God He is WORTHY of our utmost praise and allegiance! Does He have your total allegiance? Or are you holding something from Him? Some part of your life? An activity? A relationship? Perhaps your job?

2. Since this awesome God cares for us and has given us great responsibility - we can enjoy security and significance in life!
