Goal of the SUN CSA The SUN Civil Society Alliance (CSA) Myanmar unites civil society organizations to ensure that a voice is given to a range of small, independent, regional and national organizations to contribute to the national dialogue and achievement of SUN priorities. The Goal of the CSA is sustained public, political and financial commitment and action to effectively address undernutrition in Myanmar SUN CSA was officially launched in February 2015

Current membership As of February 2016, the SUN CSA Myanmar is composed of 47 civil society organizations (31 local) Members are working in: Ayeyarwaddy Region Chin State Magway Region Rakhine State Shan State Yangon Steering Committee is composed of 7 organizations (1 local) that were active in the initial startup of the SUN CSA Secretariat is composed of a Program Manager and a Program Officer, hosted by SCI

Key activities and achievements Outcome 1: A functional CSA fully participates in national and regional dialogue resulting in coordinated cross-sectoral efforts to scale up nutrition actions Enhanced coordination among CSOs Regular steering committee meetings (7 in 2015) Annual general assembly meetings Mapping of CSO members CBO exchange visits (Q2 2016) Capacity-building for local and community-based organizations Nutrition training through LEARN (Yangon & Ayeyarwaddy Region) Support to attend meetings and workshops related to food and nutrition security Training on the Order of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes

Key activities & achievements Outcome 2: CSA informs and contributes to multi-stakeholder advocacy and public awareness campaigns to achieve strategic jointly agreed advocacy objectives. Strengthening implementation and monitoring of the Order of Marketing of Formulated Food for Infants and Young Children Conducted a ToT on monitoring the Order for master trainers in Yangon (December 2015) Currently conducting cascade training on monitoring the Order for 4 CBOs: 2 already completed: RID (Chin State) and CMMCS (Rakhine State) 2 will be conducted in April and May: Freeland (Shan State) and Green Network (Magway Region) Supporting CBOs to conduct community-level awareness raising on the Order Developing IEC materials related to the Order

Key activities & achievements Outcome 3: CSA contributes evidence, information and community based experience to influence the finalisation of the costed implementation plan and future revisions of the NPAFN (National Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition) and other policies and strategies. Contributed to costing of the NPAFN (2011 – 2015) Actively engaged in the review of the MNAPFNS Coordinated response from civil society to Draft 1 Monitoring the Order together with SCI Training CBOs to use KoBo Collect app to monitor violations Monitoring a database of violations collected using the mobile app Reviewing and compiling violations into monitoring reports Working to measure the contributions of civil society to the Common Results Framework (CRF) using the results of mapping exercise (Outcome 1)

SUN CSA Myanmar: 2016 and beyond Terms of Reference (TOR) for the SUN CSA Myanmar are currently being revised in order to: Leverage past achievements and upcoming opportunities in country and globally; Ensure alignment with nutrition priorities in Myanmar and the new SUN Movement Strategy 2016 – 2020; Enhance the role of local and community-based organizations in the SUN CSA. ** Still in draft form, welcome feedback from other networks

SUN CSA Myanmar: 2016 and beyond In 2016 and beyond, the SUN CSA Myanmar aims to be a catalyst for sustained public, political and financial commitment and action to address undernutrition in Myanmar through the continued development of a strong, coordinated civil society constituency that supports further development and wider implementation of the nutrition agenda.   * First regional CSA will be in the Delta

SUN CSA Myanmar: 2016 and beyond In alignment with the new global SUN Strategy 2016-2020, activities of the CSA moving forward will include:   Expanding and sustaining an enabling political environment, specifically: Continuing to grow and strengthen a sustainable civil society alliance in Myanmar that is aligned with national priorities and the global SUN movement; Establishing 2 regional CSAs in order to more effectively represent and coordinate inputs from local and community-based CSOs (first regional CSA will be in the Delta, led by World Vision with support from SC and Secretariat) Advocate for policy coherence and that sector policies that are consistent with nutrition objectives. Prioritizing effective actions that contribute to good nutrition, specifically: Documenting and disseminating evidence-based best practices for scaling up nutrition in Myanmar. Implementing actions aligned with national Common Results Framework, specifically: Building the capacity of CSOs to implement nutrition activities that contribute to national priorities and are aligned with the Common Results Framework; Harmonizing nutrition messages in alignment with the Common Results Framework. Effectively using and significantly increasing financial resources for nutrition, specifically: Working closely with other SUN Networks to identify and engage with nutrition champions and opinion leaders in order to increase financial resources for nutrition and support the scale-up of effective nutrition policies and programs.

SUN CSA Myanmar: 2016 and beyond Collaboration with other networks, institutions and organizations Continue to collaborate closely with the other SUN Networks in country, namely Government partners, the UN and Donor Networks as well as the private sector; Strengthen connections with the Food Security Working Group (FSWG) and the Myanmar Nutrition Technical Network (MNTN); Build relationships with consumer rights agencies; Strengthen coordination with academic institutions in order to strengthen the evidence base for effective nutrition interventions in Myanmar as well as increase its credibility Once connections are formed, explore potential for developing an academic sub-commmittee  

SUN CSA Myanmar: 2016 and beyond Governance Elections for new Steering Committee will be held in Q2 of 2016 Roughly 10 members, participation of local and community-based CSOs will be prioritized Any CSO can nominate itself or another organization Chair and Co-Chair will be nominated from the Steering Committee Ideal configuration: Chair from a local organization, Co-Chair from an international organization Enhanced role of Chair and Co-Chair Chair and/or Co-Chair will represent the CSA at high-level meetings (e.g. act as MS-MSP focal point), Secretariat will play a support and coordination role Regional Focal Point Will play a coordination role, acting as a liaison between the Secretariat, the SC, and regional CBOs in order to ensure that there is active engagement of local, community-based organizations  

Funding The SUN CSA Myanmar is funded by the Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF), managed by UNOPS until June 2016 In September 2015, the CSA received funding from the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to strengthen systems for monitoring the Order of Marketing of Formulated Food for Infant and Young Child at a sub-national scale to enable accountability at the community level In January 2016, the CSA received funding from SCUK to participate in pilots of the Link Nutrition Causal Analysis (NCA) in 4 different states/regions (CBOs will be trained in the methodology and supported to collect data in their communities) Actively seeking new funding to support general operations in 2016 and beyond
