Invitational for Chief Nursing Officers and Deans and Directors of Schools of Nursing Sponsored by matching grants from the Idaho Board of Nursing and RWJF/AARP

Welcome Margaret Henbest, MSN, RN, CPNP Executive Director IALN Co-manager, INAC SIP Grant

Introductions

SIP 3 Grant awarded January 2015: 4 goals (strategic plan, lifelong learning, diversity, residency) June 2015 Strategic Planning Summit: commitment to advance 80% BSN by 2020 Fall 2015: statewide regional listening meetings for employers and schools; offered local grants Diversity of Idaho Nursing Workforce Assessment Completed evaluation of residency Continued to contribute to national dialogue Facilitated progress on new nursing database with IDOL & IBN Winter 2016: technical assistance to NIC/LCSC dual enrollment Background

Broad support for increasing the opportunities for ADN nurses to continue on to a BSN Student barriers to achieving BSN: lack of financial resources, inadequate advising, the need to balance work/life/school, lack of tangible value placed on advancement by employer or the profession, lack of confidence in their success. Significant variations in the concentration of the BSN workforce in acute care by region (85% to 17%) which correlated to geographic access to University vs. Community College education Retention BSN workforce varied by region significantly “Growing your own” local nursing workforce improved retention in rural communities, but resulted in higher % of ADN in workforce In some cases (North Central Idaho) the “feeder” school is in another state and is a community college. Statewide shortage of experienced nurses: CC, ED, OR, OB Employers are increasing their preferential hiring of BSN prepared nurses which is a national industry trend Dual enrollment strategy begun by LCSC and NIC has significant support in Northern Idaho and there is a desire to expand the dually enrolled credits Attractive opportunities for advancement transcend geographic barriers Trends

Goals 1. To have a shared understanding of INAC statewide activities to date. 2. To update participants on the IDOL grant. 3. To review and endorse the INAC draft of the Idaho Nursing Academic Progression Strategic Plan. 4. To dialogue with IDOL and other stakeholders to develop the biannual Idaho Nursing Workforce Report queries and outcome expectations. 5. To learn from the New Mexico experience with Academic Progression. 6. To understand Idaho Board of Education role and guidelines specific to nursing education. 7. To have discussion between schools on uniformity that promotes student movement between programs. 8. To have discussion between CNOs on employment methods to promote academic progression. 9. To discuss future grant opportunities for Idaho nursing.
