Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement Lunar Phase Simulator To prepare for the NMSI Moon Watch activity, you will watch a simulation of a lunar cycle. SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement Use the lunar phase simulator created by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Astronomy Education Group, found online at http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/lps.html Start the simulation by clicking “start animation” located under Animation and Time Controls. Watch as the moon completes one cycle. After watching the simulator, ask yourself the following questions Does every waxing crescent look the same? Every waning gibbous? Do the terms crescent and gibbous refer to a specific phase of the Moon? What is the difference between a new moon and a full moon? Can you think of factors not accounted for in this model? A t the end, we will discuss the questions as a class. This task uses: http://astro.unl.edu/naap/lps/lps.html Learning Objective(s): I can name the phases using a representative model. TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/email: Kelli Marcantel kelli.marcantel@cpsb.org School: Moss Bluff Middle GLE(s):ESS40-Identify and illustrate the relative positions of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun during eclipses and phases of the Moon Grade Level/Subject:8th Science Special Directions/Considerations: Activity Evaluation: Prerequisites for students:

Flocabulary Moon Phases To prepare for the NMSI Moon Watch activity, you will watch an Edpuzzle video on the Moon’s phases. You will answer questions about the Moon’s phases during the video. AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool for substitution with some functional improvement. In the “Science Links” folder of Mrs. Marcantel’s Blackboard site, click the link to EDpuzzle. Click “Student”, then “Sign up”. Here you will begin your sign up for Edpuzzle. DO NOT sign up with a google email account. Complete the information with your assigned student name, username, and password. DO NOT type your email address. Click “join” Scroll down to the video “Flocabulary- Moon Phases” Click “Start” During the video, the video will pause for you to answer questions. If you are unsure of the answer, you can replay the section. This task uses: EDpuzzle Learning Objective(s): I can name the phases using a representative model. significant task redesign. M Moon Watch Nearpod After completing the NMSI Moon Watch activity, you will share and compare your results with the class. MODIFICATION Technology allows for significant task redesign. In the “Science Links” folder of Mrs. Marcantel’s Blackboard site, click the link to nearpod. Enter the PIN Mrs. Marcantel gives you. The presentation will download and appear on your screen. The presentation is controlled by Mrs. Marcantel. Sign in with your assigned student name. This task uses: Nearpod Learning Objective(s): Determine the cause of the lunar phases as well as name the phases using a representative model TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/email:Kelli Marcantel kelli.marcantel@cpsb.org School:Moss Bluff Middle GLE(s):ESS40-Identify and illustrate the relative positions of Earth, the Moon, and the Sun during eclipses and phases of the Moon Grade Level/Subject:8th Science

R Moon Phase Skitbot Draw a picture for each moon phase. You will share your knowledge of phases using the Skitbot app. You will upload your video to Blackboard. You will view and comment on videos from other classes. REDEFINITION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable. Draw a picture for each moon phase. Use the Skitbot app to make a movie showing the correct order of the moon phases. Save your video to the camera roll on the iPad. Upload your completed video to the Discussion Board link in Blackboard. On Blackboard, you should compare your video with videos from other class periods. Compare and critique results.
