Young Knocknaheeny National Conference 2016 “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” Old African Proverb Young Knocknaheeny National Conference 2016 David Cashman Principal, Sundays Well BNS "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

Who am I? I started teaching in the area in 2008. I took a permanent job in Sundays Well BNS in 2009. I became Principal of SWBNS in January 2015. Perfect timing as this coincided with the beginning of the YK ABC programme. Who am I? "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

Our School Sundays Well BNS is on Blarney Rd. DEIS Band 2 School with an enrolment of 184. Staff of 17 amazing teachers and 6 outstanding SNAs. Shared campus with Sundays Well Girls NS. School culture of openness, inclusivity and the involvement of parents to create a whole school learning community. Our School Sundays Well BNS "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

DEIS DEIS is invaluable to disadvantaged areas. Some of the DEIS initiatives include: Literacy Liftoff, Reading Recovery Maths Recovery Home-School Community Liaison Teacher School Lunch Scheme First Steps…………………….The List goes on DEIS Band 2 We don’t have the same Pupil Teacher Ratio as schools in DEIS Band 1 To try and close the gap in this ratio, we are very INNOVATIVE in the programmes we participate in. DEIS Disadvantage in our schools. "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

OLO’s Language What they do? Curriculum Links Language is one of the biggest Part of the Schools component of Young Knocknaheeny. OLO’s……..Grace and Sally are our Oral Language Officiers Provide Speech and Language Assessments for the JI and SI children in our schools. Currently embarking on the HANEN ABC and Beyond programme. Helps our teachers promote Oral Language through big books. Practical strategies that build naturally into every part of the day. Teachers trained by our OLO’s, vis Coaching. (video recording lessons) New Language Curriculum training has commenced this year. The aim of this is not to add to the workload, but to ALLIGN the services to the National Literacy Strategy!! Language Oral Language Officers OLO’s!!!!! "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

An important element of the YK programme is research An important element of the YK programme is research. We need to know if we are making a difference. As a result, the teachers and principals in the area, participate in research by providing our STENS from standardised tests along with teachers and parents participating in pre and post surveys regarding YK initiatives. This is done outside of teaching hours and Haddington Road hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Research Are we making a difference???!!!!!! "It takes a whole village to raise a child."

HOW IT HAPPENS??!! Teaching Staff Leadership School Completion Parents Building up Trust with parents within the Community through school and YK. Ingrid in SCP voluntarily drives the Incredible years programme. Without a dynamic teaching staff at the cold front who are open to change, none of this would happen.
