The Scientific Revolution 1. The Scientific Revolution What was the Scientific Revolution and how did it change European’s attitudes toward science?

What was Europe life prior to the Scientific Revolution? 3. Prior to the Scientific Revolution, many Europeans were IGNORANT of basic EARTH SCIENCE. MOST Europeans were Illiterate ( They could not read or write ) Europeans had: Little Education Europeans had: Little Knowledge Knowledge that did exist was controlled by the Roman Catholic Church. European Education was based Bible Scripture.

How did the Church teach Science? 4. Most scientific theories were based on the writings included in Biblical ancient Greek Science. Examples: The earth is the center of the universe (geocentric theory) ! 2. God controls motion or the laws of movement !

What was the Scientific Revolution? 2. The Scientific Revolution was the RESULT of advancements made in the MATH & SCIENCE in the late 1500s and early 1600s. It was a time of intense debate between science and religion !

How did the Scientific Revolution start? 5. How did the Scientific Revolution start? Scientists began to Question ancient theories and the orthodox teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. These scientists began using Reason & Logic instead of placing their beliefs in Religion & Faith. Scientists demanded Proof & Evidence To Support a Claim or Theory!

How did the Scientific Revolution change European society? 6. The Scientific Revolution had lasting effects: & Changed the way people viewed science. The View went from….. * A NEGATIVE To A POSITIVE VIEW * Weakened the power of the Catholic Church TODAY: Many Scientists continue to challenge the existence of GOD TODAY: Science Topics are Intensely Debated Two of those are…. When does Human Life Begin & Climate Change

Geo-Centric Theory vs. Heliocentric Theory 7. Geo-Centric Theory vs. Heliocentric Theory The Scientific Revolution Questioned Ptolemy’s Theory Planetary motion 2. Church teachings were both questioned ? Copernicus’s heliocentric theory that…. …..The Earth revolves around the sun was Replaced Ptolemy’s Theory !

Who were some of the major figures of the new movement? 8. Who were some of the major figures of the new movement? Galileo Galileo supported the heliocentric theory by his observation of space through the telescope. Sir Isaac Newton Laws of Motion/Gravity. Continued to challenge old scientific & religious theories.

THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD: 9. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD: Frances Bacon: Developed the Scientific Method. It was a contribution to the Scientific Revolution. The Scientific Method established a systematic way to find proof of an assumption using Reason. O : OBSERVE H : HYPOTHESISE E : EXPERIMENT A : ANALYZE

Scientific Revolution

How did the Church respond to these scientific challenges? 10. The Church reacted with fear to the new scientific challenges Political, social, and economic authority by the Church and Divine Right Kings was on the line! Scientists who criticized The Catholic Church were brought before a Court of Priests known as an ( Inquisition) Scientists were charged with heresy ! Scientists were Tortured and or Executed *Burned at the Stake, Hanged or Beheaded Others were put on House Arrest.

11. Galileo in his trial before the Inquisition was unable to convince the court of Catholic Priests he was correct about A Sun-Centered Universe. He was convicted and sentenced to House Arrest for the rest of his life, forbidden to write or experiment. GALILEO’S TRIAL

12. In 1979, Pope John Paul II declared that the Roman Catholic Church may have been mistaken in condemning Galileo. Vatican Science Panel Told By Pope: Galileo Was Right Published: November 01, 1992 Moving formally to rectify a wrong, Pope John Paul II acknowledged in a speech today that the Roman Catholic Church had erred in condemning Galileo 359 years ago for asserting that the Earth revolves around the Sun. The address by the Pope before the Pontifical Academy of Sciences closed a 13-year investigation into the Church's condemnation of Galileo in 1633, one of history's most notorious conflicts between faith and science. Galileo was forced to recant his scientific findings to avoid being burned at the stake and spent the remaining eight years of his life under house arrest. John Paul said the theologians who condemned Galileo did not recognize the formal distinction between the Bible and its interpretation. "This led them unduly to transpose into the realm of the doctrine of the faith, a question which in fact pertained to scientific investigation. Though the Pope acknowledged that the Church had done Galileo a wrong, he said the 17th-century theologians were only working with the knowledge available to them at the time.
