Aims and Objectives

Methods of Treating Sports Injuries What methods have we discussed so far?

Cold Application When a person sustains a soft tissue injury, blood vessels are torn and blood cells and fluid escape into the space among the muscle fibres. By cooling the injury site, the local blood vessels are constricted, so blood flow to the area is reduced. Cold application has the effect of decreasing the flow of this fluid into the tissues but also helps to slow the release of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. It is best used immediately after injury has occurred, and for up to 48 to 72 hours after an injury. Never apply ice pack directly onto skin can cause ‘ice burn’ and never applied for more than 10 minutes. Cold, Burning, Aching, Numbness – as soon as the skin feels numb the cold therapy should be stopped. This process should be repeated every two hours. Cyrotherapy

Heat Treatments The application of heat to an injury site will act to dilate blood vessels, thus increasing the blood flow to the area. Sub acute stage, in order to aid the healing process. The increased blood supply will have the effect of absorbing the swelling and removing dead cells from the injury site. Growth of new blood cells and helps scar tissue form. Relaxation

Contrast Bathing Contrast bathing is the process by which alternating treatments of both hot and cold therapy are applied to the injury site and should be used during the sub-acute phase. The application of a hot treatment will increase blood flow Then a cold application is used, the blood flow to the area will then decrease and take with it the debris from the injury site. This injured site should be immersed in alternating hot and cold water for periods ranging from 1-4 minutes, with increased time initially in the cold water.

Support Mechanisms In order to help protect and support some injuries, it is possible to use a variety of products that are readily available at chemists, sport retailers etc. Create a list of all the support mechanisms that treat and prevent injury. Bandaging – increases stability of a joint, can also be used to create pressure around the injury site in order to restrict swelling. Taping – to restrict joint movement within safe limits The use of tape may well provide support and comfort for a sports person, but the benefits of use over approx. 20 minutes are dimished due to the material properties. However there are psychological value of using tape, as they feel ‘comforted’ by the application of the tape The MAGIC Sponge!

Pass Merit Distinction P3 describe the physiological responses common to most sports injuries. P4 describe the psychological responses common to sports injuries. M2 explain the physiological and psychological responses common to most sports injuries. D1 analyse the physiological and psychological responses common to most sports injuries. P5 Describe first aid and common treatments used for four different types of sports injury

This afternoon… I’m going to book computers for assignments. I want you to create a new document on GoogleDocs and share it with myself. Use this time effectively to get your assignments done. I will be there to give support and guidance.
