Jamestown Established 1607 First British colony formed in North America; nearly failed but saved by the natives

Thirteen Colonies Formed Owned by Great Britain; last one (Georgia) created in 1752

French and Indian War 1754-64 French and Indians vs. the British for control of the Ohio River Valley; British won and went into debt

Stamp Act 1765 Tax that led to colonists to rebel against the British government.

Boston Massacre 1770 Attempt by the colonists to fight back against the British; led to Revolutionary War

Election of Lincoln 1860 Caused the southern states to leave the Union

Confederacy 1861 The southern states during the Civil War

Emancipation Proclamation 1863 Attempt to free the slaves in the south during the Civil War

Appomattox Court House 1865 Place of surrender of the South during the Civil War

Reconstruction 1865-1877 Time period following the Civil War in which the government set the conditions that would allow the Southern states back into the Union

13th Amendment 1865 Granted freedom to the slaves

14th and 15th Amds. 1868 & 1870 14- Due process and equal protection of laws 15- African American men can vote
