Implementation Timeline School Year Implications 2011-2012 Student achievement expectations are based on the 2005 ELA and Mathematics Learning Standards; Districts develop curricula and begin implementing instruction aligned to CCSS; Teachers teach two CCSS aligned units per year; The 3-8 testing program and Regents examinations in ELA and Mathematics are aligned to the 2005 ELA and Mathematics Learning Standards.

Implementation Timeline School Year Implications 2012-2013 Student achievement expectations are based on CCSS (as added) and state standards; CCSS Interim Assessments are administered; Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career Readiness (PARCC) field testing will take place. 2013-2014 Student achievement expectations are based on CCSS as added and state standards. 2014-2015 CCSS PARCC assessments are operational.

English Language Arts Key Content Classic myths and stories from around the world; America’s founding documents; Foundational American literature; Shakespeare; Content knowledge in literature and other disciplines is taught through reading, writing, speaking, and listening; Content prepares students to read, write, and research across the curriculum, including in history and science; Content develops technological literacy. We will look unpack the key points in reading, writing, speaking and listening Skills related to media use (both critical analysis and production of media) are integrated throughout the standards.

Mathematics Instructional Shifts Focus; Coherence; Fluency; Deep understanding; Application; Dual intensity. Focus: strong foundational knowledge and deep conceptual understanding and are able to transfer mathematical skills and understanding across concepts and grades. Coherence: Learning is connected in and across grades. Concepts spiral up grades and develop foundational understandings into deep ones.

Mathematics Key Content Grades K-5 A solid foundation in whole numbers and operations; In kindergarten, work focuses on the number core; A continuous progression of skill development to support the acquisition of complex understandings; The stressing of conceptual understanding and procedural skills. Why K-5-5 is the end of the elementary sequence in most schools in the state Includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals; one to one correspondence, quantities, and learning how to put numbers together and take them apart; Continuous progression-fractions; negative numbers and geometry;

Mathematics Key Content Grades 6-8 An emphasis on geometry, algebra, probability and statistics; Preparation for a coherent and rich high school mathematics curriculum;

Mathematics Key Content Grades 9-12 Practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges; An emphasis on mathematical modeling; Using technology to support modeling. Practice-they prepare students to think deeply and reason mathematically; using mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, understand them better, and improve decisions; technology is valuable for varying assumptions, exploring consequences, and comparing predictions with data.
