What is a summary? A summary is a concise, complete, and accurate overview of the text. It should not include a statement of your opinion or an analysis of the text.

Consider class discussions, presentations, class videos, and the text as you think about the prompt. Write your thoughts in your Reader’s Notebook. You will silently read the story You will silently read the story. I want you to interpret the characters in the story without any interference from other students in the classroom. Reading a piece of text independently allows you to use preferred methods of visualization, skimming, or annotating to comprehend the literature. This is a “first read” in my classroom. Read at your pace and follow your own method of comprehension. 7th Grade 8th Grade After you read the story, choose a character (Cheryl, Martin, and Grandpa) to analyze. Use the graphic organizer, to record information then share with a partner what evidence from the text supported their analysis of the character. As we read the story, “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, keep in mind what both characters are like; what their traits are. Use those traits along with their motives to understand why they act the way they do.
