California/ Irvine Medical Center PROCESS CONCLUSION PURPOSE Infrastructure: Developed manual tracking system for education and certification data for each RN “Professional Practice Minute” incorporated into each meeting.  Frequently highlights who has gone back to school and/or earned a degree/ specialty certification. Unit display of Certified Nurses Agreement with University of Phoenix to offer onsite RN-BSN and MSN course Education: Educated all RNs on Nursing Certification process Facilitated Ben Hudnall on-site career counselors to review member benefits Local certification review courses offered by Staff Education, with receipt of Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust funds Reward and Recognition: Certified Nurses Day celebrated with a special recognition breakfast Annual Education Competition to award unit/ department with highest increase in certifications and RNs returning to school KPOC-Irvine has continued to increase the percent of nurses who possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s in Nursing degree for the last 3 years. From 2014 to 2016, KPOC-Irvine more than doubled the % Certified RNs and has exceeded the organizational goal of 21% As evidenced by organization-wide, nurse engagement results, nurses perceive access to professional development more than comparative hospitals. Additionally, this score has shown a trended improvement from 2014 to 2016. 1. Achieve 80% BSN rate by 2020 for hospital- based nurses 2. From 2013 baseline, increase specialty certification rate by 2% each year. BACKGROUND ANA’s Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing (2015): The registered nurse seeks knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice and promotes futuristic thinking. …participates in ongoing education activities related to nursing and interprofessional knowledge bases and professional topics. …demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning through self-reflection and inquiry for learning and personal growth. ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses (2015) The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, preserve wholeness of character and integrity, maintain competence, and continue personal and professional growth. Institute of Medicine (IOM) Future of Nursing Report (2010): Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020 Ensure that nurses engage in lifelong learning Kaiser Permanente Nursing: 7 Strategies to Maximize Potential (2015): Offer Professional Development to all nurses FUTURE PLANS Continue implementation efforts to date Seek HR solution for maintaining degree and certification database Coordinate with Ben Hudnall Career Counselors to ensure maximum benefit Seek additional education and certification support for non-represented job classifications 2016 Education Champs Certified Nurses
