Part 1- Series, Dates, and Places Comma Craze Part 1- Series, Dates, and Places

Where do you need a comma???? The day was January 3 2000. It will go down in history as the strangest day Doylestown has ever seen. That morning a teenager named Tom woke up like any other morning. After getting dressed brushing his teeth and tying his shoelaces he ran downstairs to find his sister eating the last Pop-Tart. Right in front of his sisters eyes flames of brilliant red yellow and orange bursts through Tom’s ears and nose. The flaming fires from the soles of his shoes lifted him like a rocket ship and he flew out the window never to be seen again. Legend has it that he always comes back today to roam the streets looking for Pop-Tarts.

Series Use commas to separate three or more items in a series Place a comma after each item in a list except for the last one (the word and does that for you) Red, white, and blue are the colors of the American Flag. College costs typically include tuition, dorm room, and books. A Napoleon ice cream carton consists of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry.

Dates In dates with a day and a year, use a comma after the day. Use a comma after the year unless the date ends the sentence. January 1, 2001, was the first day of the century. Taylor Swift was born on December 13, 1989.

Places Place a comma in between the city and the state. Place a comma after the state, unless it ends a sentence. Chicago, Illinois, is known as the Windy City. We’ve just booked our flights from Athens, Greece.

Commas in longer sentences We call longer sentences complex or compound sentences, because they have multiple parts. SIMPLE SENTENCE: It snowed a lot. COMPOUND or COMPLEX SENTENCE: On account of heavy snow, school was closed. It rained all day, so school was closed.

Commas A sentence that has multiple parts must have a break or pause. Read the sentence out loud to yourself, and find the natural pause. In the event of his hard work he will succeed. If he works hard he will succeed. Though Thomas was a rich man, he led a simple life.

The football team ready to win brought their best efforts to practice. My mom who was a teacher woke me up singing on the first day of school. On the last day of school I cried of happiness. Despite the rain we all still had a good time. Nancy has a calm cheerful smile that lights up any room she walks into.
